Spearfish, S.D. - The Black Hills State volleyball team crushed the Haskell Indian Nations Finghtin’ Indians by scores of 30-10, 30-10 and .30-23 Saturday afternoon at the Donald E Young Center in Spearfish, S.D.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead in game one and never looked back. Black Hills State lead 15-4 at one point in game one and cruised to victory.
“I was a little worried at the start and didn’t know what to expect from them,” said head volleyball coach Jhett Albers. “They are a young team and you never know what you are going to get.”
Junior setter Jennifer Weitzel saw her first action for the Yellow Jackets after transferring from a Wyoming junior college.
“I was excited and a little nervous,” said Weitzel. “This was a great match for us because we kept talking the whole time and stayed positive. That will be really important for us to succeed in the future.”
In game three of the match the Yellow Jackets trailed late, 20-21. Black Hills State went on to score ten of the final 12 points and secure their first victory of the season.
“In a game like that, you get down and have to fight your way back. Players have to step up and stay with it to turn the game around,” said Albers.
The next match for Black Hills State has the Yellow Jackets traveling to Columbia, Mo/.to compete in a tournament on Sept. 1-2.
Albers remarked, “We will go from playing a relatively inexperienced team to the No. 3 team in the nation. Our team will need to change and adapt in order to compete.”
Weitzel also commented on what the Yellow Jackets have to do to be competitive in Columbia, Mo.
“We need to keep our intensity up and continue to be aggressive. If we do that I feel like we can compete at an even higher level,” said Weitzel.
