Football Making Preperations For Season Opener

Spearfish, S.D. - The Black Hills State football team is only ten days away from the season opener and head coach John Scott is working hard on preparing the Yellow Jackets for kickoff.

“All of the practices seem to be running together now,” laughed Scott.

Black Hills State will open the 2006 campaign at home with four-time NAIA National Champion Carroll College on Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. in Lyle Hare Stadium.

“At this point, we’re nailing down the things that we think we can do well and are trying to eliminate the items that are not working for us. We have somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of our schemes in now. We will start installing our stuff for the Carroll game today,” said Scott. “Carroll does a lot of things that are similar to us so hopefully our guys will pick up on it fairly quickly.”

The Yellow Jackets have been relativly injury free up to this point.

Scott explained, “We had 25 guys that were here trainning with us this summer. You can really tell that those individuals are well ahead in their development.”

Black Hills State will be looking to find a solution to the void in the receiving core after the departure of leading pass catcher Zac Alcorn to the Green Bay Packers.

“We are very green at wide receiver and inexperienced at tight end. There are a lot of talented guys out here, but they still have to get used to the speed of the college game,” said Scott.

The quarterback that will be throwing the ball is yet to be decided.

“Both Erik (Osborne) and William (Gray) are having a good camp,” said Scott. “Will brings the experience of having palyed in this offense and is comfortable in it. Eric has a lot of football experience and is trying to get comfartable.”

Tickets for the Black Hills State football games are $7 at the gate. Individuals can receive a season pass to all athletic home events for the 2006-2007 season with a contribution of $175 to the student-athlete scholarship program. Please, contact (605) 642-6385 with questions.
