McCook Lake, S.D. – The Black Hills State University men’s and women’s cross country teams each placed second at the Briar Cliff Invitational on Saturday. The men’s team competed against 15 teams and the women’s team against 13 teams.
On the men’s side, the Yellow Jackets scored a total of 89 points en route to the team’s second place finish. Black Hills State was led by junior Jed Morgan. Morgan finished the 8,000-meter course fourth overall in a time of 25:30.01. Neil Long was the second Yellow Jacket across the finish line in a time of 26:07.18 to finish 19th overall. Long was followed by Laine Parish who put up a season best time of 26:16.75, finishing 22nd overall. KC Fiedler (26:21.99) and Mitch Kraft (26:33.44) placed 26th and 29th respectively. In his third collegiate race, Marc Whirlwind Soldier placed 34th in a time of 26:46.34. Rounding out the top seven for the Yellow Jackets was Seth Ulvestad. Ulvestad clocked a personal best time of 27:01.66. Other finishers for the men’s team included Trev Fiedler who ran a 27:53.93 to place 67th and Craig Leavitt who ran a time of 28:05.86 to place 73rd. Mark Wilcox finished 74th with a time of 28:09.58 and Brock Mickelsen placed 79th with a time of 28:14.72.
Black Hills State’s women’s team, ranked No. 15 in the latest poll, was led by sophomore Erin Curran. Curran finished third overall and ran a personal best time of 17:52.10 to the lead the Yellow Jackets to a second place finish with 81 points. Leigh Anne Whiteside and Brooke Wells finished 17th and 18th clocking times of 18:46.17 and 18:47.61, respectively. Abi Bever placed 23rd in 18:52.65 to round out the Yellow Jackets top five finishers. Courtney Dickson finished one spot behind Bever in 18:53.21. Lela Carpenter crossed the finish line in 18:53.49 to place 25th and Anna Yanchek finished 34th with a time of 19:14.95. Others to compete included the Becca Ellis and Teresa Klarenbeek. Ellis and Klarenbeek finished 41st and 42nd clocking times of 19:23:15 and 19:23.59,respectively. Robyn Rosechandler finished 60th in 20:04.01 and Erica Gajda ran a personal best of 20:27.21 to place 71st.
The Yellow Jackets will return to the course on October 16 for the Montana State-Billings Invitational with a partial squad.
