Spearfish, S.D. – Black Hills State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bradd Schafer announced today the signing of Joey Mitchell for the 2011-12 basketball season. Mitchell, from Hitchcock-Tulare High School, is currently entering his senior year after leading his football and basketball teams to the S.D. state championship game as a junior.
“We are extremely excited about adding Joey (Mitchell) to our basketball family,” said Schafer. “He is a tremendous person, student, and athlete. He will be a great addition to our program as we make the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II.”
As a standout quarterback on the football field Mitchell led the Patriots to a state title in 2009 with a record of 12-0.
In basketball, Mitchell earned First-Team All-State honors helping the Patriots to the state championship game. The Patriots eventually fell to White River 63-66. During the 2010 state basketball tournament, Mitchell led his team in scoring averaging 18 points per game.
Mitchell has also excelled in the classroom earning a 3.8 grade point average.
