Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University women’s cross country team is ranked tenth in the NAIA preseason poll released today. The men’s cross country team is not in the top 25, but is receiving votes.
“Our women’s team will be very strong again this year,” said head coach Scott Walkinshaw. “There is no doubt that losing a student-athlete like Wendy O’Lexey will hurt us, but I think the kids that we have coming in are skilled athletes and are up to the challenge.”
Last season, the Black Hills State women’s team finished tenth at the NAIA National Championship Meet. The men’s team did not qualify as a team for the national championship in 2009, but did finish No. 25 in the final poll.
Walkinshaw said, “On the men’s side last season, we didn’t get to the national meet as a team. The team is focused and wants to get back there this year.”
Black Hills State opens the season on Sept. 4 in Billings, Mont. for a triangular meet against Montana State-Billings and Rocky Mountain.
