Spearfish, S.D. – Black Hills State Director of Athletics Jhett Albers hosted a public forum on Tuesday evening to discuss the status of a potential move by Black Hills State from the NAIA to NCAA Division II.
“Black Hills State is looking to the future and how to best serve our student-athletes,” said Albers. “The NCAA Division II philosophy is based around the interests of the student-athlete. I believe that Black Hills State is dedicated to those same interests.”
Albers discussed the benefits of transitioning to a new affiliation and answered questions from the audience. During his presentation, Albers noted that one advantage would be the decrease in annual dues and other expenses covered by the NCAA which are currently being funded by the Yellow Jacket athletic department.
“On Thursday, the Board of Regents will discuss the overview of our NCAA Division II application,” said Albers. “If the board approves our move, the application for Black Hills State will be submitted to the NCAA by the June 1 deadline.”
If approved for membership by the NCAA, Black Hills State would move to a two-year candidacy period followed by a one-year provisional period.
