BHSU 25th In Learfield Sports Directors' Cup After Winter Sports

Cleveland, Ohio – The Black Hills State athletic program ranked 25th with 266.66 points in the final winter standings of the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup.

The Yellow Jackets scored points in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, and women’s indoor track and field.  The men’s basketball team qualified for the NAIA National Tournament for the second consecutive year and was defeated in the first round by eventual national champion St. Francis (Ind.)  The women’s basketball team advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament.  The women’s indoor track and field team was led by senior Wendy O’Lexey in the 5,000-meter run and junior Lisa Koch in the pole vault.  Both athletes finished in fourth place at the national meet.  Senior Jason Boeding led the men’s indoor track and field team with a fourth place finish in the shot put at the national meet.

“The success of our program can be directly credited to the quality student-athletes and coaches here at Black Hills State,” said Athletic Director Jhett Albers.  “The points that we score in each sport is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of those individuals.”

Black Hills State is the highest ranked school in the Dakota Athletic Conference.  Dickinson State is the closest DAC school to the Yellow Jackets with 234.5 points placing the Blue Hawks in a tie for 31st place.  Jamestown is 40th (210.75 points) and Dakota State is 56th (151.75 points) in the rankings.  Minot State is the only other DAC school to score points with 100 placing them in a tie for 78th place.  Valley City State, Mayville State, and S.D> School of Mines and Technology all have yet to place in post-season completion.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports – six women’s and six men’s.  The first spring NAIA standings will be released Thursday, June 3, 2010.  Please note, standings published midseason are unofficial.
