This past Saturday afternoon the BHSU Yellow Jackets took the field for their first scrimmage. The first team defense went against the first team offense for 30 plays followed by the second teams competing against each other for 30 plays as well. “Our goal was to see our young guys compete for the first time this season. We made a few mental mistakes here and there but overall they’re beginning to understand the system,” said Head Coach Jay Long.
Defensively the Yellow Jackets did a good job keeping the offense out of the end zone. “Every time the offense would get something going the defense would come up with a big play to stop the drive,” added Coach Long. Defensive Coordinator Jeff Larson did a great job keeping the offense on its toes by mixing up his blitz packages.
Offensively the Yellow Jackets struggled to keep drives alive. “It was a frustrating day for the offense. Mental mistakes and turnovers kept our drives from ending up in the end zone,” stated Coach Long. On a positive note the young Yellow Jacket receiving core is progressing each day.
The Yellow Jackets have one more week of camp before school starts. They will host their second and final scrimmage this weekend before they open the regular season at Southwest Minnesota State University on September 5th at 6 pm Central Standard Time.
