Yellow Jackets Finish 5th at the NAIA Outdoor National Track & Field Championships!

The BHSU women had a strong showing this past weekend in Edwardsville, Illinois by placing 5th overall in the Nation. The Yellow Jackets had two first place finishers and nine others placing in the top ten of their event.
Junior Wendy O’Lexey from Rock Springs, Wyoming led the way for the Yellow Jackets winning the National Championship in the marathon with a time of 3:01:49.01, which was nearly eight minutes faster than the second place finisher. Her marathon time was a new BHSU record. She also placed seventh in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 37:24.21. Senior Aubrey Baxter from Redfield, South Dakota won the hammer throw with a toss of 61.48 meters which broke her previous national record throw of 60.57 meters that was set in 2008. Baxter also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 50-9.25 and 11th in the discus by throwing 138-11. Senior Amber Brodersen from Wolsey, South Dakota took third place in the discus by throwing 150-11 and she also took fourth in the shot put throwing 49-09.25.
In the 3000 meter steeplechase event the Yellow Jackets had two that placed in the top ten. Junior Shelli Scheffler from Lovell, Wyoming placed seventh with a time of 10:59.44 and senior Alicia Verhulst from Ralph, South Dakota finished 10th with a time of 11:13.24. Sophomore Lisa Koch from Elkton, South Dakota placed seventh in the pole vault with a height of 11-05.75.
The Yellow Jackets scored 44.5 points as a team earning 5th place. Wayland Baptist won the National Championship with a score of 102 points.
