| April 21, 2009
Before this past weekend, the Yellow Jackets entered a two week conference road trip where they faced Jamestown College, Minot State University, and Dakota State University. BHSU went 3-4 on the two week trip that included wins over Jamestown College and Dakota State. “We used the road trip to get ourselves back to the level we were playing at after our Florida trip. These seven games gave us the opportunity to play on the field after practicing indoors for three weeks. After the Dakota State games we felt that we were ready to make our push in conference for the remainder of our games,” said Head Coach Amy Gurney. Freshman Maria Herber from Kadoka, South Dakota was a standout at the plate for the Yellow Jackets batting over .400 for the week.
After two weeks of road trips due to the weather and many games being cancelled, BHSU came in to this past weekend ready to play in front of a home crowd for the first time this season. On Sunday, the Yellow Jackets swept Mayville State University 9-5 and 5-0 to improve their record to 14-11 on the season. Senior Jessica Clark from Beach Island, South Carolina and freshman Katie Wagner from Yankton, South Dakota came up big pitching on the mound recording two wins. Wagner threw a four-hit shutout in the second contest. Sophomore left fielder Ashley Berg from Wheatland, Wyoming led the way at the plate recording her first career home run. Freshman Aleishia Giesey from Fenton, Michigan also had a strong day at the plate going three for four in the first game.
Monday, the Yellow Jackets got off to a fast start taking game one 6-3 behind another strong performance on the mound by junior Karissa Norte. She allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out four batters in seven innings of work. In the second game of the day, the Yellow Jackets started off slow defensively giving up five runs in the first inning. Having to work out of a hole, BHSU was able to close the gap but fell short as they lost the game 6-4. Defensively Ashley Berg and junior Danielle Briere from Saskatoon, Canada stepped up and made big defensive plays when the Yellow Jackets needed it. Offensively sophomore Heidi Kwilinski from Cheyenne, Wyoming had a great day going 3-8 including two RBI’s.
The Yellow Jackets will host Dawson County Community College this Wednesday, April 22nd with the first pitch going out at 4pm. The second game will start at 6pm and both games will be exhibition. This weekend the Yellow Jackets will travel to Jamestown College for their final four conference games. They will play Jamestown College and Dickinson State University on both Saturday and Sunday. They will then get ready for the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament on May 2nd, in Dickinson, North Dakota.
