Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State men’s and women’s basketball teams are both preparing for the NAIA National Championships. The men’s basketball team received an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. after winning the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament title on Sunday, March 1 with a 93-77 victory over Minot State. The women’s basketball team is awaiting word on an at-large bid to the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. Both tournaments will take place on March 11-17.
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Paul Sather is excited for the opportunity to compete in the national tournament.
“This is an exciting time for our team,” said Sather. “We are looking forward to continuing our season at the national tournament. I am so proud of what our student-athletes have done so far this season and I am excited to see what they can accomphish on the national stage.”
Head Women’s Basketball Coach Mark Nore is anxiously awaiting word of a tournament berth.
Nore said, “I really think that we deserve to be in the tournament this season. The young ladies on this team have worked so hard this season and are worthy of playing in the national tournament. Now, it is just a matter of ‘wait and see’.”
All qualifiers for both the men’s tournament and the women’s tournament will be officially announced on Wednesday, March 4. The brackets for the two tournaments will be released on Thursday, March 5.
Black Hills State will be hosting a send-off celebration for both the men’s and women’s teams on Wednesday, March 4 at 6 p.m. in the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame Room in the Donald E. Young Center. The event is open to the public and free to attend. Also, the men’s and women’s teams will be gathering at the Stadium Sports Grill in Spearfish on Saturday, March 7 at 4 p.m. for a team meal before separating and departing to the national championships.
