Black Hills State University traveled this past Wednesday to Billings, Montana for a pair of games in the Rocky Mountain Classic. The Yellow Jackets played Rocky Mountain College on Thursday night and Carroll College on Friday afternoon. They were 5-1 going into the Classic. Madison, SD-Led by individual winners JR, Wendy O’Lexey, Rock Springs, WY and SR, Cody Bordewyk, Livermore, CO, the NAIA nationally ranked Black Hills State University cross country teams swept the Dakota Athletic Conference individual and team crowns and qualified both teams for the NAIA National Championships. The Yellow Jacket Men’s Basketball Team left this past Monday to Billings, Montana for a rematch against Rocky Mountain College. Both teams met this past Friday night in Spearfish, SD at the Donald E. Young Center when Rocky Mountain won 88-76 behind a strong performance from senior guard Chase Sukut.  The Yellow Jackets entered the game Tuesday 3-1 on the season. Click above for more details.

The Dakota Athletic Conference just posted their end of the season awards for volleyball this week.  Black Hills State University had five honors in those awards.  Junior Kristin Engle, junior Mandy Brumfield, and sophomore Maggie O’Neill were named 1st Team All-DAC.  Kristin Engle also received Most Valuable Player for the DAC Conference.  Head Coach Jhett Albers was named DAC Co-Coach of the Year for his second straight year.  Click above to view end of the year DAC awards.

The Yellow Jackets entered the weekend 3-1 as they traveled to South Dakota School of Mines to play Doane College on Friday night.  Doane College came into the game ranked #25 in the country in NAIA Division II.  Saturday they took on Rocky Mountain College out of the Frontier Conference at home in the Donald E. This past weekend the Yellow Jackets took on Rocky Mountain College and Montana Tech. Both teams are in the Frontier Conference. Coming into the weekend the Yellow Jackets were 2-0 coming off their pair of wins on the road the previous weekend against Dakota Wesleyan University and Mount Marty College. BHSU traveled this past Friday to Jamestown College with one thing on their mind revenge.  The Yellow Jackets lost the last time the two teams met in Jamestown.  “We knew going in that Jamestown was a very difficult place to play.  We were hoping to play consistent throughout the match and come out on top,” said Head Coach Jhett Albers.  The Yellow Jackets at the beginning of the season set a goal to win the DAC Championship and move on to the NAIA Tournament.  They accomplished this goal this past Saturday night as they are now DAC Champions. The Yellow Jackets placed seven players on the First Team All-DAC and five players on Second Team All-DAC. The Yellow Jackets finished their season this past Sunday with a 24-23 loss to South Dakota Mines. BHSU was 6-4 on the season. Click above for more details.

The Lady Yellow Jackets took on South Dakota Mines to kickoff their post season play this past Saturday. Junior Kristin Engle set the tone early with strong play at the net. She ended with 12 kills on the evening. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Hardrockers in three games to move on to the semifinals. After waiting around all day Thursday and Friday due to weather the Men’s basketball team finally left on Saturday for Dakota Wesleyan University and Mount Marty College.  Coming into the weekend the Yellow Jackets had played two exhibition games against Division II Northern State University and Division I University of Northern Colorado. This Saturday the Black Hills State cross country teams will compete at the 2008 Dakota Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. The meet returns to the Madison Country Club in Madison, SD, the site of the inaugural event in 2000 in which both Yellow Jacket teams won DAC titles. Click above for more details.

The Yellow Jackets last Saturday took on the #18 ranked Jamestown College Jimmies on their home field.  The Yellow Jackets came out strong and played like a team that had everything on the line.  “Our kids didn’t have much riding on this game but more importantly we played the game because it was a football Saturday,” said Head Coach John Scott. The Lady Yellow Jacket Women’s Basketball team opened this past weekend with a trip 45 minutes down the road to Rapid City, South Dakota to play in the South Dakota School of Mines Classic. A year ago the Lady Yellow Jacket reached the Elite Eight of the NAIA National Tournament and set a record for wins on the season with 28. Click above for more details.
