BHSU Yellow Jacket News

Last weekend the Yellow Jackets defeated rival South Dakota School of mines 26-0 on senior day at Lyle Hare Stadium.  The Yellow Jackets reclaimed the Homestake Trophy back from the Hardrockers after a 23-24 defeat in 2008.

Fresh off their 3-0 victory Wednesday night at South Dakota School of Mines the Yellow Jackets will return home this Saturday to host the first round of the DAC Playoffs.  BHSU received the #2 seed going into the tournament and will host #7 Minot State at 7PM in the Donald E. Young Center.

This Friday the Black Hills State cross country teams will compete at the 2009 Dakota Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships. The meet returns to Robbinsdale Park in Rapid City, the site of the third DAC Cross Country Championships held in 2002.

There will be a registration table set up prior to the women’s and men’s games this Saturday night, Oct 31st.  There will also be a registration held at the Dairy Queen in Spearfish on Thursday, November 5th, between 5:30 and 7:30PM.  BHSU Men’s Basketball players will be present to help with registration.

The men’s and women’s basketball programs will open their seasons this weekend in the Donald E. Young Center.  The women will start the weekend off Friday night at 5:30pm as they take on College of Saint Mary out of Omaha, Nebraska.

The cross country dual meet with SD School of Mines and Technology scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, October 30th has been cancelled due to the weather conditions. The meet will not be rescheduled. The next meet for The Running Yellow Jackets will be the Dakota Athletic Conference Championships scheduled for Friday, November 6th at Robbinsdale Park in Rapid City. The women’s race will take place at 11:00 am followed by the men at 11:45.

This Saturday the 4-4 Yellow Jackets are in Lyle Hare Stadium for their final home game of the season.  South Dakota School of Mines comes into Spearfish with a record of 4-3 fresh off a victory over Valley City State last weekend.  Both teams enter this contest 3-3 in DAC play.

The Yellow Jacket volleyball team competed in their final two regular season home games this past weekend at the Donald E. Young Center gymnasium. Black Hills State was able to put on an impressive show and pick up a decisive win over foe Valley City State in three sets. Saturday, the Yellow Jackets came back to battle the Jamestown College Jimmies. The Yellow Jackets were unable to hand Jamestown their first loss of the season as they fell in four sets.

The Yellow Jacket Cross Country program had a positive week moving up in the recent NAIA rankings.  The men’s team jumped up to 13th from 16th in the previous poll.  The women moved up to 18th after sitting at 21.  The Yellow Jackets are off this weekend but will return to action next weekend as they host the Yellow Jacket/Hardrocker Dual on October 30th.

This Saturday the 4-3 Yellow Jackets will be in Lyle Hare Stadium to take on the 3-4 Jamestown College Jimmies.  Both teams are coming into this contest 3-2 in DAC play.  “Jamestown is entering this game on a three-game winning streak.  The first few games their offense struggled but since then they have really started to click.  Jamestown and us are very similar in a lot of ways and this should be a solid matchup,” said Head Coach Jay Long.

The Black Hills State University men and women’s cross country teams will be competing in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational this Saturday, October 17. Both teams are coming off impressive wins in the Montana State University-Billings Yellow Jacket Invitational last Saturday, October 10.

It’s safe to say that expectations are high for the Black Hills State University Men’s Basketball team this upcoming season.  With all five starters returning from a team that finished with a BHSU record 30 wins and made it to the National Semi-Finals, there is good reason why.  Any liklehood of sneaking up on their opponents are gone, replaced by a huge target on their back.

The Lady Yellow Jackets return 4 starters, two 1st team all-conference players, and an All-American for the 2009-2010 season.  They also return some other very talented players from last year’s basketball team that went 26-8.  BHSU made it to the Elite 8 of the NAIA National Tournament and lost to the eventual national champions, Morningside College.

You don’t have to look very far to see the impact of 9-man football players on the Black Hills State University roster especially if you’re an opposing offensive player. Three starters on the Yellow Jacket defense come from 9-man schools.  Camp Crook linebacker Forest Sainsbury, New Underwood defensive back Clayton Schleusner and Newell nose tackle Sterling Boylan have all had an impact on the Yellow Jacket defense so far this season.

 

This past Saturday the Yellow Jackets were at Lyle Hare Stadium as they took on Dickinson State University.  Both teams came into the contest 3-0 in DAC Play.  On an extremely cold afternoon the Yellow Jackets and the Blue Hawks both struggled offensively in a defensive battle.

The Black Hills State Lady Yellow Jacket Volleyball team turned up the tempo toward the end of the first half of their DAC conference season. The Yellow Jackets notched three impressive wins over conference opponents Mayville State, Dakota State, and rival S.D. School of Mines.

It was a cold day for the teams competing in Saturday’s Yellow Jacket Invitational held at Riverfront Park in Billings, MT. Despite the icy conditions and a temperature near 20 degrees, both the Black Hills State University men and women's teams turned up the heat to capture team titles. The annual meet hosted by Montana State University-Billings had eight teams competing.

This past weekend the Yellow Jackets traveled to Valley City, North Dakota to take on DAC Conference opponent Valley City State University.  The Yellow Jackets took an early lead into halftime 7-0.  In the second the half BHSU again got off to a fast start increasing their lead to 23-7 entering the fourth quarter.  The Vikings put together a good fourth quarter to close the gap to 23-21.  On the two point conversion senior linebacker Nic Prather from Marysville, California tackled the Valley City State quarterback for a loss which sealed the game for the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets defeated Valley City State University this past weekend to improve to 4-1 on the season.  The Yellow Jackets haven't lost since the first game against NCAA II Southwest Minnesota State University.

This past Saturday the Yellow Jackets were in Madison, South Dakota to take on the Dakota State University Trojans.  The Trojans took the early advantage scoring on a blocked punt near the end zone.  After the score by Dakota State the game turned in favor of the Yellow Jackets as they went on to score 44 straight points to take the Missouri River Shootout trophy for the fourth consecutive year.

The Lady Yellow Jacket volleyball team hit the road for their first two away conference matches. The Yellow Jackets battled undefeated Jamestown College and another tough side from Valley City State. The Yellow Jackets were not able to pull out a victory against the Jimmies, but did defeat the Vikings of Valley City to move their conference record to 3-1.

Senior setter Mandy Brumfield was named DAC Player of the Week for her efforts this past weekend.  BHSU defeated Dickinson State University 3-1 and Minot State University 3-0 to improve to 12-8 on the season.

Black Hills State University and the Yellow Jacket Foundation hosted the Second Annual Yellow Jacket 5K/10K Run on Sunday, Sept. 20 to cap off Swarm Week festivities.  The event raised nearly $1,000 for scholarships to Black Hills State student-athletes.

Victoria Lounsbery has recently signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Black Hills State University beginning in the fall of 2010.  Victoria is currently a senior at Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The 5’7” setter has been a standout athlete in volleyball and track & field during her time in high school.

The Yellow Jackets took the field this past Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out crowd for Swarm Days.  The day kicked off with the legendary Swarm Day parade which started at 10 AM.  Following the parade was the tailgate party in the Young Center parking lot which was headlined by Kory and the Fireflies.  The Yellow Jackets took the field at 1 PM and never looked back burning the Comets 50-12.

This weekend, the Black Hills State Yellow Jacket volleyball team played their first two DAC games of the season. Friday night the Yellow Jackets picked up an impressive win against Dickinson State in front of a large home crowd. The Lady Jackets then capped off the Swarm Day festivities with another victory over Minot, pushing them to a 2-0 conference record.

After two weeks traveling on the road the Yellow Jackets return home for Swarm Days and the DAC season opener this Saturday against Mayville State University.  BHSU is coming off a 21-7 victory last weekend in Alva, Oklahoma against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.  “After two weeks on the road our team is ready to play in front of a home crowd and it being Swarm Days is just an added bonus,” said Head Coach Jay Long.

Last weekend the Yellow Jackets had a pair of standout performances at the South Dakota School of Mines Invitational.  Sophomore Jed Morgan from Loveland, Colorado won the men’s race with a time of 26:25 which was 17 seconds faster than the runner-up finisher.

Black Hills State Yellow Jacket volleyball partook in the Quality Inn Classic in Hastings, N.E. this past weekend. Two of the Yellow Jackets four games were against NAIA Top 25 teams as Black Hills State fell in three of their four matches moving them to 10-8 overall.

The BHSU football program traveled to Alva, Oklahoma this past weekend to take on NAIA powerhouse Northwestern Oklahoma State University.  The field conditions were wet due to the rain that started early in the morning Saturday and didn’t stop until halftime.  The Yellow Jackets went on to defeat the Rangers 21-7.

Following a four kilometer road race on September 4 against Wartburg College and BHSU Alumni the men’s and women’s cross country teams officially opened the 2009 season by sweeping the South Dakota Mines Cross Country Invitational in Rapid City on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets will depart Thursday morning at 11:30 AM for Alva, Oklahoma to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State University who is fresh off their victory over NCAA II Colorado State University at Pueblo 32-28.  This will be the second meeting between the Raiders and the Yellow Jackets.  In 2008, the Raiders defeated BHSU 10-7 at Lyle Hare Stadium in a very close game throughout.

Coming into the game this past weekend Southwest Minnesota State University was coming off a 6-4 season the previous year including a loss to BHSU early in the 2008 season.  This past Saturday Southwest avenged the loss in 2008 as they defeated Black Hills State University 55-10.

Saturday, the Black Hills State Yellow Jacket volleyball team faced off against Rocky Mountain and Montana Western in the second and final day of the DWU/Mount Marty tournament. The Yellow Jackets continued their groove from Friday as they defeated the Battlin’ Bears and the Bulldogs to push their winning streak to five.

Friday, the Lady Yellow Jackets met up with both Mount Marty and Briar Cliff in the first day of the DWU/Mount Marty Tournament. With the momentum from Wednesday night’s win still fresh in the huddle, the Yellow Jackets stepped onto the floor and posted two more much needed victories.

The Black Hills State University cross country teams open the 2009 season today, September 4, with a 4k road race against Wartburg College from Waverly, IA. The race will be the opener for both teams with strong cross country traditions.

The Black Hills State University Lady Yellow Jackets squared of against NCAA Division II opponent Chadron State College at 7 PM tonight. This match was the first home contest for Coach Jhett Albers’ team. The Lady Yellow Jackets put on a show for the large crowd that filled the Donald E. Young Center gymnasium as they rolled past the Eagles in three sets.

Friday the Black Hills State volleyball team played NAIA #4 ranked Azusa Pacific and Dana College in the Red Raider Classic. Friday’s matches were a big test for the Lady Yellow Jackets as they looked to measure up against two well coached teams. The Jackets were able to rise to the occasion and push their record to 4-3.

This past Saturday afternoon the BHSU Yellow Jackets took the field for their first scrimmage.  The first team defense went against the first team offense for 30 plays followed by the second teams competing against each other for 30 plays as well.  “Our goal was to see our young guys compete for the first time this season.  We made a few mental mistakes here and there but overall they’re beginning to understand the system,” said Head Coach Jay Long.

Over 50 3rd-6th graders attended Midget Mania this past Saturday on the BHSU campus which was followed by a barbecue in Lyle Hare Stadium.  At the barbecue the Yellow Jacket program hosted an autograph session where the campers were able to meet their favorite Yellow Jackets.  BHSU Head Coach Jay Long was pleased with the turnout.

The Lady Yellow Jackets finished up the Carroll College/UGF Classic in Great Falls, Montana yesterday. First, the Jackets squared off against Co-host University of Great Falls on their home court. Both teams were equally matched throughout, as the match went all the way to five sets.

Yesterday the Yellow Jackets played two talented Montana teams in the first day of the Carroll College/UGF Classic. Black Hills State was able to start the day off right by recording their first win of the season against Montana Tech.

Last night the Lady Jackets battled a talented Carroll College team in their 2009 season opener in Helena, Montana. The Lady Jackets had troubles passing the ball against the unorthodox Saint offense in the first two sets, which led to inconsistency in offensive execution.

The Black Hills Sate University men’s and women’s cross country coach Scott Walkinshaw (12th Year) released the final schedule for the upcoming 2009 season on Friday with the teams first meet, the Alumni Open, on Friday, September 4. “I think it is a very good schedule,” Walkinshaw said. “This year we have taken a different approach with the major meets we will be attending.

The Black Hills State University Women’s Golf Team is entering their 5th year of competition in the Dakota Athletic Conference.  The Jackets are once again being led this year by former BHSU golfer Jaime Bentley, and assistant coach Ray Ginsbach.  The BHSU women’s golf team is coming off its most successful season in which they won their first ever Dakota Athletic Conference Title, and their first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.  The team is looking forward to continuing the success they had last year, and to defend their conference title.

The BHSU men’s basketball team has much to be excited about for the 2009-10 season and has scheduled some quality opponents to get themselves prepared for their Dakota Athletic Conference Schedule (DAC).  The exhibition games are highlighted once again with very tough NCAA Division I and II opponents starting November 2nd with a game at Big 12 Iowa State University.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off their 2008 DAC Championship and NAIA National Tournament Appearance where they finished 26-8 and ranked 13th in the NAIA.  BHSU will start the 2009 season only losing one player from that 2008 roster due to graduation but gained three new freshmen that should all make an immediate impact.

Black Hills State Yellow Jacket Football will begin preparation for their fall season on August 12th with 17 returning players with starting experience.  The Yellow Jackets will begin fall camp with a two-day orientation with 43 newcomers to the program.  On August 13th 45 veterans will report to camp with practices beginning that afternoon.  First year Head Coach Jay Long and his staff are looking to build upon past years of success and compete for a Dakota Athletic Conference Championship.

Kyley Barela, a 2009 graduate of Cheyenne Central High School in Cheyenne, WY will complete the Yellow Jacket Roster for the 2009-2010 season. Kyley is a second baseman and outfielder. She plans on pursuing a Psychology degree at BHSU. Her parents are Charles and Cynthia Barela.

Jhett Albers was recently named Dakota Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year.  Albers accepted the athletic director position in January of 2006, he also teaches for the physical education department, and is the head volleyball coach for the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets were led this past weekend with a strong showing by senior Trent Waage from Aberdeen, South Dakota by winning the marathon with a time of 2:28:27.00.  Junior thrower Jason Boeding from Caputa, South Dakota placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 178-00.

The BHSU women had a strong showing this past weekend in Edwardsville, Illinois by placing 5th overall in the Nation.  The Yellow Jackets had two first place finishers and nine others placing in the top ten of their event.

The women track & field team won the Dakota Athletic Conference meet yesterday in Madison, South Dakota with a score of 232 points.  The meet came down to the last event where the Yellow Jackets were able to pull away.  The men finished in second place at the meet.  Click above for a complete list of all events and results.

Breanna Janovy, has recently signed a letter of intent to play college basketball for Black Hills State University beginning in the fall of 2009.  Breanna is currently a senior at Sturgis High School.  During her four years in high school she has participated in basketball, volleyball and track.

Junior pitcher Karissa Norte from Aurora, Colorado was honored this past week by the Dakota Athletic Conference by being named DAC Softball Player of the Week.  In four games, Karissa batted .538 going 7-13 including two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and five RBI's.  Freshman outfielder Maria Herber from Kadoka, South Dakota was also honored by being named All-Conference.  Herber was honored for her effort at the plate and in the outfield. Maria batted .429 for the season where she led the Yellow Jackets. Click above for more details.

The Yellow Jackets closed out the Dakota Athletic Conference in first place this past week which gave them the automatic bid to the National Tournament in Rapid City, South Dakota.  The National Tournament will take place at Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course in Rapid City May 12th-15th.  The Yellow Jackets will compete against 28 other teams in the NAIA.  Click above for more information on the tournament.
 

Cameron Anderson has recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Black Hills State University beginning in the fall of 2009.  Cameron is currently a senior at Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyoming.  He has been a part of one of the most successful basketball programs ever in Wyoming history.

Jenessa Rantapaa, a senior at Lead-Deadwood High School has signed a letter of intent to play golf at Black Hills State University beginning in the fall of 2009.  Rantapaa has been a member of the Lead-Deadwood golf team since the beginning of her seventh grade year.

It is time again for the 3rd Annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament put on by Black Hills State University Basketball.  This years tournament will be on Sunday, May 3rd with registration beginning at 9AM and games will start at 10AM.  All games will be played in the Donald E. The Yellow Jacket Women’s Golf Team is ready to get back on the golf course and build on their most successful fall season in program history.  The Jackets finished the fall season with two tournament victories and one second place finish, and are eager to build on that success heading into the spring season.

DAC Commissioner LaVern Jessen announced this weekend that their will be four games on November 8th in the Fargodome.  The Yellow Jackets will play a conference game in Fargo and pairings are based on DAC standings which won’t likely be determined until the prior week’s games are finished.  The # 7 and 8 teams in the conference will play against each other as will the # 5 and 6 teams. The top four teams will compete in a 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3 format.

The BHSU track & field teams will now compete this weekend in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the Lance Butler Invitational. They were scheduled to compete in Greeley, Colorado.  Please visit the 2009 outdoor track & field schedule for all meets, locations, and results.

The Yellow Jackets started their season traveling to Cocoa Beach, Florida where they played ten games during spring break to open their non-conference action.  The Yellow Jackets came out of the trip 6-4 playing against NCAA Division II & III teams.

The Yellow Jacket Men’s Basketball program concluded their season this past Monday night losing to the eventual National Champion Oklahoma Wesleyan University 85-72.  The Yellow Jackets led at halftime 46-45 but it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets finished 30-5 on the season. BHSU broke many records during their remarkable run to the final four of the NAIA National Tournament.  Click below to view records that were broke this season.

The Yellow Jackets finished their remarkable season this past week advancing to the elite eight round of the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight year.  Sophomore Katelynn Lamb was named Honorable Mention All American for her efforts in the National Tournament and throughout the season.  Lamb averaged 14 points a game during the 2008-09 season and helped her team to a 26-7 record.  Click below to read more.

Johnson City, Tenn. – Black Hills State senior Aubrey Baxter took home two national titles and led the Yellow Jackets to a number of outstanding performances at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. The 2009 NAIA National Championship Brackets have been released for the women's and men's tournaments.  The women will take on Southern Oregon University Wednesday, March 11th at 9:15 PM CST in Sioux City, Iowa.  All games will be played at the Tyson Event Center.  The men will take California State University East Bay Thursday, March 12th at 10:15 AM CST in Branson, Missouri.  All games will be played at Keeter Gymnasium on the College of the Ozarks campus. Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State men’s and women’s basketball teams are both preparing for the NAIA National Championships. The men’s basketball team received an automatic berth to the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. after winning the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament title on Sunday, March 1 with a 93-77 victory over Minot State. The women’s basketball team is awaiting word on an at-large bid to the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. Sophomore Cain Atkinson, sophomore Luke Enos, and sophomore Will John Johnson were all named 1st Team All-DAC on Monday.  On top of being named 1st Team All-DAC Luke Enos was named Dakota Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player.  Head Coach Paul Sather was named DAC Coach of the Year.  Click below to view DAC end of the year honors.

The Yellow Jackets entered the game this past Sunday having won 11 games in a row.  BHSU got to the championship game after defeating Dakota State University and South Dakota School of Mines earlier in the week.  Minot State University defeated Mayville State University and Dickinson State University.  The Yellow Jackets entered the game ranked #5 in the NAIA and with a record of 26-4.

Junior Brittany Fuhrman from Mobridge, South Dakota was selected First Team All-DAC yesterday.  Fuhrman has already broken the school record for three-point field goals made at BHSU earlier in the season and can now add this to her resume for an outstanding career.  Sophomore Katelynn Lamb from Onida, South Dakota was also selected to the First Team All-DAC after having an outstanding second year in a BHSU uniform.  Sophomore Janna Schriber from Gillette, Wyoming was named DAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year for setting the tone in the Yellow Jackets pressure defense. The Yellow Jackets traveled this past weekend to Dickinson State University for a battle between the top two teams in the Dakota Athletic Conference.  BHSU came into the DAC Championship game after defeating Dakota State University and Jamestown College earlier in the week.  Dickinson State defeated Mayville State and Valley City State.

Sophomore forward Luke Enos earned Dakota Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his efforts this past week against Minot State University and Dickinson State University.  Enos scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Friday against Minot State and scored 22 points and seven rebounds Saturday against Dickinson State.  BHSU won both games giving them a two game lead in the conference.  With the wins the Yellow Jackets improve to 21-4(10-1 DAC) on the season.

Vermillion, SD--The Black Hills State University Track and Field teams came through with some big performances at the Bill Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by the University of South Dakota. Leading the way was Aubrey Baxter (SR, Redfield, SD) who recorded wins in both the shot put and the weight throw.

The Yellow Jackets entered the weekend needing to pick up two key victories to help them move into a tie for first place.  On Friday, Minot State came into the Donald E. Young Center looking for some revenge from the previous game.  In the first half, the Yellow Jackets got off to a sluggish first ten minutes until they caught fire taking the lead into halftime 30-23.  In the second half freshman Piggy Pili led the way connecting on three shots behind the arc.

BHSU traveled this past Friday to Jamestown College with one thing on their mind revenge.  The Yellow Jackets lost the last time the two teams met in Jamestown.  “We knew going in that Jamestown was a very difficult place to play.  We were hoping to play consistent throughout the match and come out on top,” said Head Coach Jhett Albers.  The Yellow Jackets at the beginning of the season set a goal to win the DAC Championship and move on to the NAIA Tournament.  They accomplished this goal this past Saturday night as they are now DAC Champions. Lisa had an outstanding race covering the 26.2 mile distance in 3:29.41 (3h:29m:30s). Her time placed her 20th in her division that had 608 finishers. The Yellow Jackets Men’s Basketball team started last season with a lot of new faces to the program.  As the season went on those new faces started inserting themselves into the starting lineup.  At the end of the season the Yellow Jackets were starting five freshmen and finishing with a 16-14 record, which was good for fourth place in the Dakota Athletic Conference.  The Yellow Jackets now return those five starters along with others to improve in 2008-2009. Senior Rob Johnson who will be attending Black Hills State University in the fall of 2008 has recently been named Mr. Basketball for the State of Wyoming. Aubrey Baxter (Redfield, SD) has qualified for this year’s Olympic Trials in the shot put with a throw of 54-00.50. Junior Aubrey Baxter from Redfield, South Dakota won the National Championship in the hammer with a throw of 198'9" and in the shot with a throw of 51'3/4". The Black Hills State University football team traveled last weekend to face #2 Carroll College in Helena, Montana in the first round of the NAIA Playoffs. The Yellow Jackets were hanging tough at halftime only trailing 0-13. A few costly turnovers in the second half helped Carroll gain a 0-34 advantage to close the game. Click here for article.

Joe had 139 total yards and two touchdowns in the 52-0 win on Saturday. With the win the Yellow Jackets moved up in the rankings to #21 and are in a three way tie for the DAC Conference tile. The Yellow Jackets men's basketball team traveled last weekend to Montana Tech for their first game of the 2007-2008 season. The Jackets got up on the Orediggers in the first half and never looked back as they took the game 84-76. The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman Cain Atkinson with 21 points. Junior defensive back Tony Dill was named DAC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Mayville State University last weekend. Tony grabbed four interceptions in the win. Freshman Kraig Tafoya was named Special Teams Player of the Week for punting three times and pinning the Comets inside the 20-yard line all three times. On August 18, the football team took the field for their first Jacket vs. Jacket scrimmage. This was a great opportunity for the players to get their first taste of live action. During the scrimmage we were able to see the 1st string offense vs. the 1st string defense. “We made good progress and the mistakes we made are correctable,” according to Coach Scott.

Four members of the Yellow Jacket cross-country team participated in the 12th annual Race for the Cure, held in Cheyenne, Wyoming this past weekend. The event, which included over 2,000 participants, volunteers, and spectators, is a 5k run/walk through the streets of Cheyenne and is held annually to increase awareness and fight against breast cancer.

Wisconsin newspaper recently published an article on the outlook for former Black Hills State University star Zach Alcorn as the Green Bay Packers Training Camp begins. In the article there is a quote from the Green Bay Head Coach Mike McCarthy as he talks about Zach having the best hands on the team.

Black Hills State University Yellow Jacket Football announced their second signings of 20 football recruits which brings the incoming recruiting class to 40 prospects for the 2007 fall season. Included in the second signing of the year are nine athletes from South Dakota and four from Wyoming. Scott commented, “With the exception of a kid or two more this will wrap up our signings for the year. We expect to have ninety to ninety-five young men for fall camp. Overall we had a good year recruiting South Dakota where we signed fifteen kids from throughout the state”. The season kicks off on September 1st when the Yellow Jackets take the road to meet Carroll College at Helena, Montana.  First home game is September 8th where the Jackets will host Wisconsin Eau Claire.
