BHSU alum guest directs for University’s Swimming in the Shallows production
Friday, October 05, 2012 Michael Shann’s career in theatre has taken him all over the world, but there is one place he always returns to. “I always tried to keep my ties with Spearfish and Black Hills State University,” he said. Shann, a 1970 graduate of education with a drama and history emphasis, started his career on the BHSU stage. Next week, he will be the guest director for BHSU’s first production of the season, Swimming in the Shallows by Adam Bock.

Thursday, October 04, 2012 When Newley Kartak first got the message from an editor at Cosmopolitan that he was a finalist for the fashion magazine’s 2012 Bachelor of the Year, he thought it was a prank.
Only after realizing it was a New York number did the reality set in, he said. Cosmo recently released its Bachelor of the Year 2012 finalists, one from each state, with Kartak, a BHSU admissions counselor, voted as South Dakota’s bachelor of the year.

Spearfish Chamber of Commerce donates $2,000 for BHSU scholarships

BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp noted that the donation is an investment in BHSU students that provides a benefit not only for the students, but also for the entire community.

BHSU alum recounts vivid details of Wounded Knee massacre
Wednesday, September 26, 2012 More than 50 people attended a presentation on the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre by Jerome Greene, a 1968 BHSU graduate. Greene read excerpts from his manuscript including first-hand survivor accounts obtained from his research. The presentation, part of the Swarm Week festivities, was sponsored by the BHSU Alumni Office and the Case Library for Western Historical Studies. Greene is one of several alumni honored this homecoming.
BHSU to host American Indian College Scholarship Gala

Black Hills State University will host the sixth annual American Indian College Scholarship Gala Saturday, Oct. 13 in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room. The event kicks off with a reception at 6 p.m. and a dinner at 7 p.m.
BHSU crowns 2012 Swarm Week Royalty
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 Seth Courtney, a communication major from Belle Fourche, and Hannah Kloiber, a business administration major from Spearfish, were crowned the 2012 Swarm Week king and queen at Black Hills State University last night.
