Jerome Greene credits Black Hills State University for cultivating his passion for history into an accomplished lifelong career. The successes Greene achieved over the years were recognized during during the BHSU 170thcommencement ceremony Dec. 12.
Greene, a 1968 graduate, received an honorary Doctor of Letters and Literature for his career as a National Park Service employee and an award-winning author.

When Black Hills State University alum Jerome A. Greene was a young boy in New York State he would search for arrowheads, pottery fragments and other American Indian relics along the shores of Lake Ontario.
Greene’s keen interest in American Indian history only grew and he has created a lifelong career studying, writing and educating others on the lives and culture of American Indians across the United States.
Now a retired curator, historian and award-winning author, Greene will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters and Literature Degree during the 170th BHSU Commencement Ceremony Saturday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m. in the Donald E. Young Sports & Fitness Center. Greene also will address graduates during the commencement ceremony.
Father and son BHSU alums publish book about Standing Rock Reservation

Black Hills State University alums and father, son, Donovin Sprague and Rylan Sprague recently published their book “Standing Rock: Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation.”
“Standing Rock: Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation” is a contemporary book that showcases the most recent history of the Standing Rock Reservation through photographs. The oldest photos in the book date from the 1930s.
BHSU Ruddell Gallery to Showcase DakotaWorks art show

BHSU alumni opens art show about colorful farming life

Black Hills State University just opened a new and original exhibition “Herding Cats,” featuring an array of colorful cows by BHSU alum Jessie Palczewski-Longbrake, who now teaches pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade art at Dupree School in Dupree, S.D.
The works will be displayed in the Ruddell Gallery in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union until Nov. 13. The Ruddell Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Professor named 2014 BHSU Difference Maker

Black Hills State University professor Dr. James Hess was awarded the 2014 Difference Maker at the 1883 Gala recently.
The 1883 Gala honored Hess, along with other BHSU contributors that donated more than $1,883 in a calendar year or more than $50,000 in a lifetime. The Gala also raised funds for BHSU scholarships.
