BHSU alumna selected as South Dakota Teacher of the Year
Wednesday, October 24, 2012 When East Middle School science teacher Katie Anderson walked into school last Monday, she had a special announcement for her students – the Black Hills State University alumna had been voted South Dakota’s Teacher of the Year.

Colorado woman donates funds to establish scholarship for BHSU Native American students
Tuesday, October 23, 2012 Black Hills State University’s high percentage of Native American students prompted Boulder, Colo., resident Joscelyn Blumenthal to donate $10,000 to establish an endowment fund that will be used for scholarships for Native American students.

BHSU alumni recognized during 2012 Swarm Week
Thursday, October 11, 2012 Black Hills State University alumni who were honored for their successes credited their experiences at BHSU as paving the way for their accomplishments. The five alumni were honored during the recent BHSU Swarm Week Alumni Awards luncheon, an annual event which recognizes the outstanding achievements of alumni.

Well-known poet and teacher advocate Taylor Mali will speak at BHSU
Thursday, October 11, 2012 Taylor Mali’s mastery with words inspired many to go into the teaching profession. Now, for the first time in the state the former teacher and well-known poet will bring his message to Black Hills State University. Mali will speak Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Meier Recital Hall as part of the Madeline A. Young Distinguished Speaker Series.

The first edition of the Black Hills Journal, the original name of the Rapid City Journal,has found a permanent home in Black Hills State University’s Leland B. Case Library of Western Studies.

BHSU alum guest directs for University’s Swimming in the Shallows production
Friday, October 05, 2012 Michael Shann’s career in theatre has taken him all over the world, but there is one place he always returns to. “I always tried to keep my ties with Spearfish and Black Hills State University,” he said. Shann, a 1970 graduate of education with a drama and history emphasis, started his career on the BHSU stage. Next week, he will be the guest director for BHSU’s first production of the season, Swimming in the Shallows by Adam Bock.

BHSU admissions counselor selected as finalist for Cosmo’s Bachelor of the Year
Thursday, October 04, 2012 When Newley Kartak first got the message from an editor at Cosmopolitan that he was a finalist for the fashion magazine’s 2012 Bachelor of the Year, he thought it was a prank.
Only after realizing it was a New York number did the reality set in, he said. Cosmo recently released its Bachelor of the Year 2012 finalists, one from each state, with Kartak, a BHSU admissions counselor, voted as South Dakota’s bachelor of the year.
