Brookings High School senior earns prestigious Nelson Scholarship at BHSU

The Joseph F. and Martha P. Nelson Scholarship at Black Hills State University has been awarded to Morgan Mahanke, a Brookings High School senior who will graduate this May and attend BHSU in the fall. She plans to major in chemistry with a goal of working in forensics.
BHSU graduate dedicates class projects to raising awareness of mountain pine beetles
Thursday, April 11, 2013 Recent Black Hills State University graduate Mike Miller used his class projects in his final semester to raise awareness of the mountain pine beetles plaguing the Black Hills area.
Less than a year ago, Miller had no idea that mountain pine beetles existed. After learning of the devastating problem while working last summer as a security guard for Spearfish Forest Products, Inc., Miller dedicated his last semester at BHSU doing everything he could to get the word out on the pine beetle problem.

Della Vecchia leaves legacy on BHSU and Spearfish community

Although a native New Yorker, Guido Della Vecchia spent nearly 30 years in Spearfish creating a life with his wife Johanna Meier and becoming an integral part of Black Hills State University and the local arts community. Guido died Wednesday at the age of 82 from complications from pneumonia.

Vucurevich Foundation donation funds scholarships for BHSU academic summer camps
Friday, March 15, 2013 The John T. Vucurevich Foundation recently approved $2,500 in grants to fund scholarships for Black Hills State University summer academic camps.
The scholarships will be offered for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) camps which include: the Science Scholars Summer Institute, the Engineering Technology Camp – 3D Drafting: Designing a Home, and Taking Care of Business Accounting Style.

Black Hills State University recently honored the descendants of Elmer E. and Martha V. Johnson as the 2013 Legacy Family. The award was presented by BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp and Steve Meeker, vice president of University Advancement, during halftime at a recent BHSU basketball game.

The newest exhibit in the Black Hills State University Ruddell Gallery offers a glimpse into the influence living and working in South Dakota had on a group of local artists. The exhibit, “History of Things to Come,” will be at the second floor gallery of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union through March 8.

A prospective Black Hills State University student recently earned a scholarship by using her social media skills.
BHSU recently announced that Sonja Pederson of Sioux Falls won a $1,000 scholarship in the Smile, Send, and Win social media contest.
