Class of '02
Reporter & Social Media Director for KNBN
Anya (Olverson) Mueller, Class of ’02, greets the Black Hills each weekday morning as a reporter and social media director for KNBN, Rapid City’s NBC affiliate. With her bright smile and engaging personality, Anya is a natural in front of the camera.
Born in Watertown and a graduate of Spearfish High School, Anya job shadowed with a disc jockey at KBHU, BHSU’s campus radio station, while in high school.
“After that job shadow experience at KBHU, that’s when I knew I wanted to be in radio and TV,” said Anya.
Anya majored in mass communication at BHSU and was on staff at the radio and TV stations as a freshman.
“At BHSU, I got to dive in right away,” said Anya. “I saturated myself into everything I could do to improve.”
As a freshman on campus, Anya says she bonded with classmates who worked at KNBN and those connections helped her secure an internship at the station.
“I started in production, learning how to operate a camera and run the teleprompter,” said Anya. “Then I worked my way up into the news.”
Anya says persistence is the key to success, something she learned from BHSU professor David Diamond.
“‘Follow-through all the way to the end,’ that’s what professor Dave Diamond always used to say,” said Anya.
Anya says Diamond mentored her and many other mass communication students, teaching them key industry lessons they carry on to this day.
“Be trustworthy and honest of your word, be on time, and prepare. Especially in this industry, you have to be one step ahead of everything,” said Anya.
Anya loves her job but continues to consider new opportunities. This summer, she released a unique video blog called ‘Clogging in the Kitchen with a Corgi.’
“I want to host the Travel Channel!” said Anya. “We’ll see if that ever happens, but you’ve got to dream big, right?”
