Placement Information

All entering students must provide valid ACT scores (within the last five years) or must take the COMPASS examination in the areas of writing skills, mathematics, and reading to show evidence of their level of academic preparation prior to their enrollment into their initial mathematics, English, and reading courses. Pre-general education courses include ENGL 031, ENGL 033, MATH 021, MATH 101, and READ 041.

Placement through ACT: standardized test scores determine placement in English Composition and Math courses. For students with valid ACT scores, the scale used for placement is:

  • ACT English 18 & above ENGL 101
  • ACT English 16 - 17 ENGL 031*
  • ACT English 1 - 15 ENGL 033*
  • ACT Math 20 & above MATH 102/104
  • ACT Math 18-19 MATH 101
  • ACT Math 1-17 MATH 021 *

Students whose ACT reading sub-score is less than 18 MUST take the following course:

  • ACT Reading 1-17 READ 041*

*These classes do not satisfy degree requirements.

Placement through COMPASS: All students who do not have ACT scores or who have ACT scores older than five years must take the COMPASS Exam. Students may either contact the Student Success Center at 605.642.6951 or the University Center- Rapid City at 605.718.4193 to take this exam. The scale used to determine placement with this exam is listed below:

Writing Exam

  • COMPASS 74 & above ENGL 101
  • COMPASS 1 - 73 ENGL 033*

Algebra Exam

  • COMPASS 41-100 MATH 102/103/104
  • COMPASS 31-40 MATH 101
  • COMPASS 0-30 MATH 021*

Reading Exam

  • COMPASS 0-77 READ 041*

*These classes do not satisfy degree requirements.
