Biomedical research leads to scientific careers for BHSU students, alums

Alumni who complete biomedical research while studying at Black Hills State University are succeeding in doctoral programs and making great strides in their scientific careers. Since 2008, the South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (SD BRIN) has provided 142 Undergraduate Research fellowship awards to 95 individual BHSU students. Fellowships are paid opportunities for students to put scientific principles into practice.

BHSU Music kicks off full program of events for the spring semester

The BHSU Music Department continues their schedule of events for the 2019 spring semester with performances from each vocal and band ensemble as well as senior recitals and a special choir performance in Sioux Falls. Performances are located in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall on the Black Hills State University campus and are free to community and students, unless noted.

Haakon County students to benefit from BHSU scholarship in memory of Marjorie Briggs

The children of Marjorie (Pickles) Briggs of Midland are carrying on the value their parents placed on higher education by establishing a scholarship at Black Hills State University. Haakon County students are eligible for the scholarship beginning this fall. Marjorie, who passed away in August at the age of 91, attended Black Hills State (formerly Black Hills Teacher’s College) in the early 1950s. She earned her teacher’s certification and taught in country schools near Robbs Flat and Midland.

BHSU names Anatomy & Physiology Lab for donor Carol Lundberg

Black Hills State University honored Spearfish resident Carol Lundberg recently by naming the Anatomy & Physiology Lab on campus in her honor. Lundberg is a generous supporter of BHSU having established a scholarship fund for students with additional support in her estate plan for math and science scholarships.

BHSU scholarship awarded to students in memory of Gage McSpadden

Two Black Hills State University students will receive the Gage McSpadden TRIO Essay Scholarship this fall. The scholarship is in memory of McSpadden, a TRIO student and athlete at BHSU who was killed by a lightning strike in 2015. Molly Graesser, exercise science major from Gregory, and Kaitlyn Kumpf, elementary education major from Hemingford, Neb., are this year’s TRIO scholarship recipients. Both students are part of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) at BHSU, a program designed provide services for first generation college students who are income eligible.

Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament adds to scholarship at Black Hills State University

The 18th Annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament was held recently at Spearfish Canyon Golf Club. The proceeds from this year’s Memorial Golf Tournament, silent auction and donations totaled $6,300. This brings the amount in the Mark Larscheid Memorial Scholarship to $74,900 at BHSU. This year’s scholarship recipient was Whitney Scott, a graphic design major and pole vaulter from Watertown. 

Wyoming educator’s impact inspires scholarship legacy at BHSU

The Guthmiller and Burgess families donated $10,000 to the Black Hills State University Foundation to create the Betty Lloyd Memorial Scholarship Endowment at BHSU. An annual scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior at BHSU majoring in Elementary Education. Preference will be given to students from Casper, Wyo. The first award will be given the fall of 2018.
