• Students with ACT English Scores of 1-15
  OR COMPASS writing scores of 1-48
  
  Additional Notes
• English 033 is taken as a pre-requisite for English 101
• English 033 is graded as RU—Remedial Unsatisfactory or RS—Remedial Satisfactory

For Placement into English 031—Which must be taken concurrently with English 101

• Students with ACT English scores of 16-17 or COMPASS verbal scores of 49-70
• Students are required to take 1 credit hour of tutoring once a week for 15 weeks—15 contact hours per semester are required.
  
  Additional Notes
• Students placed into English 031 should NOT enroll in Internet English 101 classes or in 8-week English 101 classes
• No Internet tutoring—all tutoring should be face to face.
• Students must pass English 031 with an RS.

Course Cap Guidelines

• English 033 classes should be capped at 20.
• English 031 tutoring sessions should be capped at 20.
• English 101 classes are capped at 25.

Placement Appeals

• If students are placed into English courses based upon their English ACT scores, and they would like to challenge this placement, they can take the COMPASS writing exam and use that score to challenge placement.
• If the COMPASS does not yield different results but students still would like to challenge placement, they must see the Director of Composition at Black Hills State University and prepare a timed, written exam.
• However, COMPASS scores should not automatically “trump” ACT writing scores, since often advisors need to consider additional factors like ACT Reading scores.
