Graduate Endorsements

The School of Education offers courses leading to endorsements in Early Childhood/Special Education, Middle School, Pre-Kindergarten, Special Education, Math Specialist, and Science Specialist. Check with graduate studies coordinators for specific course requirements. Endorsements are not recorded on the students’ transcript. Students must apply to the South Dakota Department of Education in Pierre to add a certificate endorsement(s) to their teaching certificate.


Pre-K (Preschool) Endorsement

The requirements for the Pre-K (Preschool) endorsement are as follows:

  1. An approved program in child development or early childhood education
  2. 24 semester hours in child development or early childhood education to include the courses listed below:
  • *Course in General Psychology
  • *Course in Child Growth and Development
  • *Course in Teaching Students with Exceptionalities
  • * denotes classes typically taken in undergraduate degree program
  • SPED 560 – Family Systems and Professional Collaboration
  • ECE 511 – Guidance for Young Children
  • ECE 513 – Early Childhood Curriculum
  • ECE 517 – Methods of Early Childhood Education
  • ECE 795 – Practicum in Early Childhood
