Project SECOND is a unique program for people with a four-year degree who want to teach in a high school or middle school. In one calendar year you can be fully certified and ready for your own clasroom.
Who is eligible?
Individuals with a degree in a teaching content area from an accredited college or university with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.6 or higher.
Is Project SECOND right for you?
Individuals who…
- work full time or live at a distance or in rural areas and do not have easy access to a college campus
- have a high probability of obtaining a teaching position in their local area
- are able to complete a rigorous online one-year program with a cohort of their peers
How to Apply for Provisional Acceptance
- Contact the Project SECOND Coordinator at Liz.Fayer@BHSU.edu
- E-mail a copy of your unofficial transcripts with a request to evaluate them for eligibility to Project SECOND to the Director of Field Experiences at Micheline.Nelson@BHSU.edu
- Apply to the program upon eligibility to participate in Project SECOND. Apply Online today!
- Register for the PRAXIS -PPST or CAAP if needed, and for the Praxis Content Knowledge test indicated on your transcript review. For more information on the Praxis exams, go to: www.ets.org. Under Praxis select South Dakota for information including registration, test dates, and other testing information.
- Mail three professional letters of recommendation to the Project SECOND Coordinator:

When you have successfully completed the steps above, an interview will be scheduled.

Steps for Full Admission
- PRAXIS-PPST or CAAP and Praxis Content Knowledge test must be completed with passing scores by August.
- Successful completion of the pre-professional coursework (i.e., EDFN 295, EPSY 302, and EDFN 338).
- Completion of the Admission to the Professional Teacher Preparation Program Application Packet for Project SECOND.
