Mission Statement

The Mission of the College of Education is to prepare competent, confident, and caring professionals.  Competent graduates demonistrate broad knowledge and apply research-based instructional practices; they reflect and think critically to impact all students  Graduates exhibit confidence in their ability to prositively affect stduent learning, behavior and motivation.  Caring graduates establish relationships in an environment of mutual respect and rapport as evidenced by all students feeling valued and safe.

The College of Education is charged with the responsibility of providing leadership in the development and enhancement of the professional competencies for those individuals who seek to provide educational services. Black Hills State University has the largest teacher education program in the state. As an educational student, you can major in Elementary School Education, Middle School Education, Secondary School Education, Special Education, Physical Education or the composite major in Early Childhood Special Education. You may also choose to major in one of two non-teaching majors: Outdoor Education, or Wellness Management.

Teaching minors are also offered in American Indian Studies, Art, Athletic Coaching, Biology, Chemistry, Early Childhood, Earth Science, Economics, English, Geography, History, Industrial Technology, Library Media, Math, Music-Vocal, Music-Instrumental, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Middle School, Reading, Sociology, Spanish, Speech and Theater.

The educational experience at Black Hills State University is designed to be intellectually stimulating and socially challenging while preparing you for a productive teaching career. Educational faculty are highly trained, genuinely caring and deeply committed to training the highest quality teachers possible.

The undergraduate degree awarded is the Bachelor of Science in Education. A master of science degree program in curriculum and instruction is also offered with specializations in Educational Technology, Math, Science & Reading.
