Dr. Romkema, what types of leaders are being trained in the College of Business and Natural Sciences?
Well, our CBNS faculty members are committed to delivering quality programs to qualified students in a student-centered, service-oriented environment. We provide a context for students to reach their potential so that they may contribute to their communities, the global environment as well as their professions and families. So what’s our secret…? It all comes down to the following: people (students, faculty, staff), the strength of our programs, and our joint commitment to effective preparation for a profession and life!
Tell us about your background.
Born and raised in Spearfish, SD, I attended Black Hills State University and earned an undergraduate degree from BHSU in instrumental music, a master’s degree in business education, and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Wyoming. My teaching background includes faculty positions at the University of Wyoming, Northern Michigan University, and the Independent Institute of Russian Entrepreneurship in Moscow, Russia. With a keen interest in international travel and work, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to serve as a training advisor with the Environmental Policy and Technology Project in Russia and as an office manager in London, England.
What role does service play in your life?
Giving back (to one’s community, region, and profession) is a personal core value. It's a pleasure and a privilege to be a member of the Zonta Club of Spearfish, the Spearfish Area Community Foundation, and serve as a Zonta International Past District 12 Governor (SD, WY, MT, and CO). Also, I am a former member and president of the Spearfish Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) Board of Directors and Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce. Nationally, I serve as National Association for Business Teacher Education (NABTE) Director and serve on the National Business Education Association Executive Board.
How do you spend your “free” time?
My favorite activities include running, traveling, playing the piano, and reading…My husband and I are enthusiastic runners and have competed in many marathons. In April 2010, I competed in my seventh Boston Marathon!
