- Biology
The biology major is intended to give students an undergraduate education with an emphasis on several broad areas within the science of biology. It is strongly recommended that all Biology majors take Calculus, have one year of Physics, and minor in Chemistry. Computer science proficiency is highly recommended. - Chemistry
Chemistry at Black Hills State University is actually a subdivision of the larger Science Department that includes Biology, Geology, and Physics. The close association of all of these disciplines in a single department makes for a vibrant scientific community with strong interdisciplinary interactions. - Environmental Physical Science
Environmental Physical Science deals with the identification, study, and treatment of a variety of environmental problems including ground and surface water quality and management, waste treatment, land-use planning, soil testing, contaminant chemistry and monitoring, hazardous waste disposal, land reclamation, and energy management and production. - Physics
The Physics Faculty includes, Dr. Dan Durben and Dr. Andy Johnson. Dr. Johnson has adopted an action-based and discussion-oriented teaching approach for his Introduction to Physics Courses. This approach is based on recent advances in physics education research and has been backed up by evaluations taken by students both upon entering and completing introductory physics courses at BHSU as well as all over the US.
