The English Department at Black Hills State University provides professional courses for majors and minors as well as general education courses in writing and literature. Through coursework and advisement, our faculty help you to develop your written and oral powers of thought and expression, and we provide you with a comprehensive background in literature and literary criticism. Additionally, we prepare teachers in the curriculum of grammar, literature, and writing pedagogy. This hard work and cooperation brings positive results: students in the English program at BHSU consistently score highly on the English CAAP and PRAXIS exams.
We offer four tracks for the English major (English, Composite, English Education, and Composite English Education) and English minor. The composite majors allow you to take additional classes in Speech, Theatre, and Communications. Additionally, as an English major, you may choose a concentration in writing.
The English major at BHSU prepares you to pursue a number of different careers, and our alumni have followed a variety of paths including graduate school, education, entrepreneurial endeavors, and publishing.
Students in our major are valuable members of the campus community. The English Club holds an annual short story writing competition, runs a film festival, and publishes The Greenbowl Review, a journal of literature and art. Additionally, as an English major, you can compete in essay competitions, including the Stewart Bellman awards, and are eligible to apply for a number of Humanities Department scholarships.
