  • American Indian Studies
    Enroll in American Indian Studies and gain an understanding of the history and culture of Native Americans, with special emphasis on the tribes of South Dakota. Be exposed to the Lakota language to develop a greater appreciation of the Lakota culture.
  • History
    Black Hills State University provides a history program emphasizing American History, European history, and regional history. Learn about past events and people, explore themes in historical eras, develop the ability to analyze and interpret historical documents and publications, apply computer technology in the field, and practice the skills of historical research and writing.
  • Human Services
    The Human Services major at BHSU is an interdisciplinary program that reflects the reality of the human service philosophy and occupations, which are linked by the emphasis on empowering individuals and groups to reach their full potential.
  • Political Science
    The Political Science program is designed to give majors and minors a strong background in American government and politics, international relations, comparative politics, and political philosophy. A variety of internships are available with the state legislature, governor’s office, and many lobbying groups.
  • Sociology
    Develop the sociological perspective that incorporates an understanding of social structures and their influences on human behavior, methods of research and empirical analysis, and linkages between private troubles and public issues.
