Do Journalism at BHSU

The Journalism emphasis at BHSU provides students complete knowledge and skill preparation for careers in the field of print media in the United States, internationally and online. Students will become solidly competent and competitive in today’s exciting and diversifying job market in this rapidly paced profession playing a vital role in today’s society.

The journalism program focuses on the development of writing, reporting, editing, research, and media management skills, as well as analysis of the press and related emerging communication technologies. Students will also gain knowledge of media law and ethics.

Students will have access to valuable, practical experiences through hands-on participation in the award-winning, student-run newspaper, The Jacket Journal, a member of the Associated Scholastic Press. Student work is also published via the newspaper’s online component at, which also features links to the campus radio and television stations. Journalism students work with the most updated technologies and software in a converged media newsroom.

The BHSU journalism program has excellent relationships with media professionals in the Black Hills region and beyond. Many local to national publishers work with students as interns and employees while they attend the university and as they graduate.

BHSU offers a journalism major, minor, and certificate program.
