Kelly Kirk is an Instructor of History and the Director of the University Honors Program at BHSU. As an instructor, she teaches a wide variety of courses, including South Dakota History, Black Hills History, Westward Expansion, American Military History, Civil War and Reconstruction, Public History, and a variety of American history surveys. While advising multiple student organizations on campus and serving on various university committees, Kelly also directs the Veterans' Legacy Program, an interdisciplinary research project sponsored by the National Cemetery Administration, aimed at developing a broad collection of public history materials that tell the story of America's veterans buried in the five veterans' cemeteries in the Black Hills region. A graduate of Black Hills State University, she completed her graduate work at Montana State University Bozeman, where her research focused on gendered political experiences in the modern American West. Her recent publications have focused on the woman suffrage movement in Montana and the Black Hills. She serves as a book reviewer for South Dakota History and North Dakota History: Journal of the Northern Plains. With such a focus on public and local history, Kelly also helps coordinate internships for students in the department and enjoys working with students to develop their own research projects.
