Donald J Altmyer, CPA, and Professor is a Pittsburgh, PA native and graduated from Duquesne University in 1977 with an accounting degree and joined the audit staff of Ernst & Young that same year.  He moved to Santa Ana, CA in 1980 to start an accounting practice and sold the business in 1991 to pursue a college teaching career.  Don completed his master’s degree at California State University, Fullerton in 1991 and taught at Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Stanislaus, Cypress Community College and the University of La Verne.  In 1995, he moved his family to Spearfish and was appointed as an assistant professor of accounting at Black Hills State University.   Don was appointed as the South Dakota Stock Market Game Coordinator in 1997 and the BHSU Center for Economic Education Director in 2003 and became a full professor in 2006. He created and delivered the first BHSU online business class in 1998 and continues to teach online accounting courses. Don has several peer-reviewed journal articles in the following research areas: online student learning versus student learning styles and student ethical awareness in business programs.  His dedication to volunteerism and community service is evidenced with prior service as President of the Spearfish Ambulance Service, President of the Spearfish Optimist Club and President of the Spearfish Disc Golf Association.  Don is a former disc golf world champion and designed the disc golf courses at BHSU and the Spearfish Canyon Disc Golf Course. The Spearfish Canyon Disc Golf course is the top-rated course in South Dakota and is rated in the top 50 courses in the nation.
