WebAdvisor is the medium for students to do business at the university. It will enable you to register for classes (Register for sections), pay your tuition bill (SDePay), view your grades (Grades), evaluate your credit for your chosen major (Program Evaluation), and view any financial aid that you might have.
Your advisor will be able to assist you in finding courses for your major of study. To find your registration date go to “Registration Time Inquiry”. Students with holds (see My Restrictions) will need to resolve those issues prior to registering.
How to Register
Select WebAdvisor
- WebAdvisor for students
- Register for sections
- “Search for Sections” will allow you to look for courses without logging on to WebAdvisor. You cannot register for sections from this screen.
- "Search and register for sections" or "Express Registration" (this option requires that you've already completed the search and have the 5 digit syn number for each course)
Enter your WebAdvisor ID and Password
- Three unsuccessful login attempts will lock your record for 15 minutes. To avoid a lock, use the “What’s My User ID and Password” link after the 2nd unsuccessful attempt to login.
- “Reset my password” will return a temporary password to your email account. This might go to “junk mail” with some email accounts. The email will be from “Datatel”.
Select “Search and Register for Sections”
- A minimum of 3 fields must be completed. We recommend:
- Term
- Subject (BIOL, ENGL, HIST, etc.) You can enter up to 5 different subjects per search.
- Course number if you know it, if not your search will return all (subject) courses offered for that term.
- University (BHSU-Black Hills State University
- Location (SHMC-Spearfish Main Campus). Leaving this blank will return all courses offered by BHSU at the main campus and the Rapid City locations.
- Other fields can be used to narrow your search but using additional fields will slow the processing time.
Click “submit” only once! Multiple clicks will cause an error and you will have to reenter your information.
Courses meeting your criteria will appear on a list.
Check the box next to the sections you are considering. Note whether the class is “open” or “closed”. You will not be allowed to register for a “closed” course.
This list is your “preferred list”. Courses will remain here until you either “Register” for, or “Remove from List”. Select the appropriate action.
BHSU does not maintain a “waitlist”. “Audit” courses will result in you paying for the course but not receiving credit for the course.
The next screen will show you the classes which you have been registered for or error messages at the top of the page for reasons of registration failure.
Continue this process until you have registered for the desired number of courses. Keep in mind that an average of 16 credits each semester is required to complete a bachelor’s degree in 4 years.
To drop a class, go to Menu, Drop Sections, check the box next to the course you wish to drop, and click submit. You may drop and add courses up until the time the semester starts.
