Earn your Bachelor's degree in General Studies

Are you ready to complete your Bachelor’s degree? BHSU now offers a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies. The General Studies degree is a flexible option to help you complete your degree. Courses can be taken at our campus in Spearfish, online, or at the University Center in Rapid City.

Students have the flexibility of choosing courses from three emphasis areas, along with the general education requirements for a total of 120 credits.

The Bachelor of General Studies is a degree program designed for the student returning to college after an absence and who has earned significant college credit. It is not designed for first-time freshmen. 

  • General Education Courses - 41 credit hours
  • Three Emphasis Areas -- 15 credit hours of three separate areas, for a total of 45 credit hours
    Select from the following emphasis areas:
    • Allied Health
    • Business
    • Education
    • Fine Arts
    • Humanities
    • Social Science
    • Science, Engineering and Mathematics
    • Technology
    • Wellness
  • Electives --  31 credit hours
  • Capstone Course - 3 credit hours

    NOTE: At least 32 credits toward the degree must be at the upper-division level

Capstone Course:
The Capstone Course is an integrative approach offered completely online in which you demonstrate that you are knowledgeable in your three areas of emphasis and have achieved college level competencies in communication, critical analysis, problem solving, and synthesis. This is done through a culminating project or portfolio.

Mastery Demonstrated:
In addition to the capstone course, you will be required to perform satisfactorily on the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) examination; and demonstrate mastery of learning outcomes including: written and oral communication, the social sciences, the fine arts and humanities, mathematics, the natural sciences, and information literacy.
