The Public Relations emphasis at BHSU provides students with advanced skills in a rapidly growing, diverse communications field and many opportunities for well-paying careers. Students fine-tune their written, oral, and visual-design skills and apply creative and strategic
thinking in hands-on projects on campus and in the community. Students will also gain competencies in media law and ethics in the profession of managing relationships between an organization and its publics. Students in this program can look forward to careers with Public Relations and advertising/marketing firms, small businesses to large corporations, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.
The abilities of Public Relations professionals are varied depending on the career path, and may include writing press releases, developing websites, newsletters, brochures/pamphlets, memorandums and various scripts and promotional copy. Students support their work with
professional planning and research processes and analyses, as well as the design of media kits and campaigns. The exploration and application of a variety of communication formats such as print, broadcast and graphics media – as well as advancing technologies, such as social media -- are essential learning components of the Public Relations curriculum.
Students of Public Relations gain valuable, practical experiences through participation in the award-winning BHSU PR Club, an active affiliate of the Denver-based Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Students also supplement classroom instruction by participating in the
award-winning campus newspaper and other university organizations. Opportunities for internships and jobs are offered by many regional to national organizations.
