Get Involved with Communication Arts

Be seen, heard, and in print

The Communication Arts field at BHSU offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to become involved. Students, regardless of major or emphasis, can be involved in all levels of KBHU-TV, KBHU-FM and the Jacket Journal. KBHU-TV provides opportunities for students to experience television broadcasting by servicing the campus with informational and entertaining programs, while KBHU-FM 89.1 & 90.7 FM The Buzz brings the best alternative to Spearfish, SD and the surrounding areas. The Jacket Journal is Black Hills State University’s newspaper that is produced bi-weekly and is a member of the Associated Collegiate Press and participates in the University Wire (U-WIRE) national news service cooperative.
Some ways students can be involved in these organizations are in advertising, production, writing, photography, video, multi-media graphic design, pagination and more. Other student organizations for students to get involved in are SAS Advertising, Shutterbuzz, Art Club, and Student Public Relations Organization.

Take on the internship

All Communication Arts students will complete an off-campus internship their senior year. This internship can be completed anywhere in the world, as students have landed competitive internships in London, LA, New York, Denver, as well as several places throughout the Midwest. Many students have done Photography and Public Relations internships with Disney World. Recently a student completed a competitive and prestigious Photo Journalism internship with the Army. Staying close to home is also an option. Communication Arts students have done internships at nearly every major graphic design/advertising agency in South Dakota, and several students have completed Marketing, Photography, and Public Relations internships with the State of South Dakota. The Sanford Lab is another popular place students have done internships.
