New First-Year Students
First-year students are selected through a special application process. General guidelines for acceptance include an ACT score of at least 25 (or equivalent SAT) and a high school GPA of at least 3.5. Other considerations are lifelong learning experiences, service, and other evidence of a commitment to achievement beyond grades.  To apply, please submit the following:

  • A complete application (below)
  • One letter of recommendation from a teacher; a letter from an employer can be substituted if you have been out of school for more than three years. Submit this via email to the Director of the University Honors Program, Dr. Courtney Huse Wika. Letters addressed to Dr. Huse Wika will also be accepted at University Honors Program, 1200 University St., Spearfish, SD, 57799.

Continuing/Transfer Students
Interested continuing and transfer students with a 3.3 GPA are encouraged to apply before spring of their sophomore year. Requirements are as follows:

  • A complete application (below)
  • One sample essay of at least three pages written for any college course. Submit this via email to the Director of Honors, Dr. Courtney Huse-Wika
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member who is familiar with your academic work. This letter should be submitted separately by the faculty member. Electronic submission is acceptable.

In addition to completing the information above, provide a well-developed essay in which you explain why you are a good candidate for the University Honors Program. We are interested in your academic work and serious, extracurricular activities. Some topics to consider are community and school service, athletics, journalism, music, and the arts. Feel free to include any personal experiences that you believe have helped you develop your own, positive perspective on learning. Finally, discuss how the program will benefit you in your academic, professional, and/or personal goals.
