SEPTEMBER 13th & 14th

Serving as a succession to the successful 2018 Arts and Education at Black Hills State University, this year’s 2019 Conference at BHSU will follow up on community-based projects are taking place throughout South Dakota.

This year’s Arts & Education Conference at BHSU will feature an all-day collaborative painting workshop in Spearfish Canyon on Friday, September 13 with a series of presentations and workshops taking place on the campus of BHSU on Saturday, September 14.

Our goal for year’s event will be to once again bring together artists in the visual and performing arts, arts educators, educators in all disciplines, and any interested community members for a two-day schedule of workshops and presentations. The conference will feature art practices for social engagement and community involvement taking place right now, and ways to continue them in the future. This conference is held in conjunction with the South Dakota Art Education Association (SDAEA) and the South Dakota College Art Association (SDCAA). Conference participants do not need to be members of either organization to attend.

Our goal of this conference will be to equip participants with socially-engaged arts activities so you can lead community-oriented arts projects within your local communities.

Check out the handout/lesson plans from the conference. Available until December 15, 2018.

Tyler Read

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Tyler "Siamese" Read is a graffiti artist, who has served as the Community Engagement Coordinator for the Rapid City Arts Council for the past 5 years. Tyler's path to becoming an arts professional was unconventional, working in factories and painting graffiti on the sides of trains in his spare time for years before discovering a legal place to create in downtown Rapid City where he began to learn more about his community and explore new avenues. Tyler has since worked to develop innovative programming focused on attracting the teen, young adult, and "at risk" youth demographics by infusing street art and pop culture into the programs he designs.Tyler has received fellowships from the Creative Community Leadership Institute, OTA Builders, and in 2017, was awarded a Bush Foundation Fellowship to continue his work in supporting communities developing public art spaces. He has collaborated on projects with The Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Rapid City Juvenile Diversion Programs, Americans For The Arts, and The Hero Effect, an Oprah Winfrey Network television program. Tyler formerly served as the programming chair for the American Advertising Federation of the Black Hills, the Rapid City Police Department's Community Advisory Committee, and the Cheyenne River Youth Project's Strategic planning committee and advisory council. Tyler's participation in the development of the now nationally renowned Waniyetu Wowapi (Winter Count) Art Park, and RedCan Jam in Eagle Butte, SD under the supervision of the Cheyenne River Youth Project helped him to realize the potential to empower people and communities through graffiti art.

Tyler will share the story of his unconventional path through the arts, recognizing the key factors and people who laid the path that dramatically altered the course of his life from a manual laborer, to a creative community catalyst, and challenge us to always be on the lookout for the opportunities that come along for us to be that life altering support for others.
