2016 World Tourism Days
"Tourism for All - promoting universal accessibility"
After the success of hosting the 2015 World Tourism Days, Black Hills State University is pleased to host the 2016 World Tourism Days Celebration on October 3-5. Celebrated annually on September 27th globally, World Tourism Day is the biggest international event in tourism to raise awareness among the global community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The 2016 global theme is Tourism for All – Promoting Universal Accessibility, which will highlight disability issues in the context of travel and tourism.
Globally, it is estimated that there are more than 1 billion persons with disabilities, as well as more than 2 billion people directly affected by disability. While this signifies an immense potential market for travel and tourism, it still remains immeasurably under-served due to inaccessible travel and tourism facilities and services, as well as discriminatory policies and practices.
To meet these needs, the 2016 World Tourism Days at Black Hills State University will focus on creating global awareness in disability and universal access in travel. Specially, the World Tourism Days celebration at BHSU would serve several purposes:
- To create awareness of disability issues and the need for universal access in tourism.
- To safeguard and promote awareness of the contributions of the tourism industry in communities, especially as an economic engine in the state of South Dakota and beyond.
- To provide a forum to learn and to celebrate the significance of the tourism industry in South Dakota and beyond.
- To provide a forum for students to connect with tourism businesses.
- To increase public awareness of the Tourism and Hospitality program and the School of Business at Black Hills State University
World Tourism Days would be the premier annual event hosted by the THM program at BHSU School of Business to celebrate the significant contribution of the Tourism Industry on society.

Tourism and Hospitality Expo
Wednesday, Oct. 5
Tourism and hospitality businesses are invited to setup a table on campus and showcase their businesses, announce open recruitment for internships or other positions, or simply celebrate the World Tourism Days with us. Businesses can also sponsor a table during the luncheon. They can decorate the table and invite students, faculty, or the public to join their table. This is another great opportunity to support these efforts while also getting to know others interested in promoting tourism in the region.
The main celebration will be held on Wednesday, October 5th at 12:00-1:30 pm in the Jacket Legacy Room
- Business - Students Speed Dating
Wednesday, Oct. 5
This is an adaptation of a Buyer meets Seller format. Business will be divided into several segments (e.g. attraction, accommodation, restaurant, DMO, transportation). Students and exhibitors will have 15 minutes each to discuss topic pertaining to that industry. After 15 minutes, students would move to another table that has different segment of the tourism industry.
