Black Hills State University will host a lecture on hydrogen solar cells by Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer John A. Turner. The talk, “Frontiers, Opportunities and Challenges for a Hydrogen Economy” will be held Friday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. in Jonas Hall room 305.

The registration deadline for the DDN Class Start Right: Build Your Own Business has been extended to Oct. 11. The class, sponsored by the South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO) at Black Hills State University, has partnered with Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the Black Hills (CCCS/BH) to offer the class via DDN at the following locations: Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, and the University Center-Sioux Falls.

Michael Shann’s career in theatre has taken him all over the world, but there is one place he always returns to. “I always tried to keep my ties with Spearfish and Black Hills State University,” he said. Shann, a 1970 graduate of education with a drama and history emphasis, started his career on the BHSU stage. Next week, he will be the guest director for BHSU’s first production of the season, Swimming in the Shallows by Adam Bock.

Taken at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Hot Springs,it depicts a stairwell hidden away from the busyness of the medical center’s daily routine.

When Newley Kartak first got the message from an editor at Cosmopolitan that he was a finalist for the fashion magazine’s 2012 Bachelor of the Year, he thought it was a prank.
Only after realizing it was a New York number did the reality set in, he said. Cosmo recently released its Bachelor of the Year 2012 finalists, one from each state, with Kartak, a BHSU admissions counselor, voted as South Dakota’s bachelor of the year.

Spearfish Chamber of Commerce director Kent Campbell presents $2,000 check for BHSU scholarshipsThe Spearfish Chamber of Commerce recently donated $2,000 for student scholarships at Black Hills State University. BHSU President Kay Schallenkamp noted that the donation is an investment in BHSU students that provides a benefit not only for the students, but also for the entire community.

Dr. Symeon Waseen, Black Hills State University music professor, will perform one of his personal compositions with American pianist Stephen Swedish during a recital Saturday in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall. The program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will include Schubert’s “Trout Quintet” with string players from the Black Hills region, along with selections including Debussy’s L’isle joyeuse and Dialogues written by Waseen.
