More than 200 candidates for graduation will be recognized during the 170th Black Hills State University commencement ceremony.
The fall commencement ceremony is at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center on the BHSU campus.
Education and plans about what to learn can be tough for any student of any level. Black Hills State University Honors Program students came up with the idea of how to learn faster and easier.
Megan Hohn, elementary education and early childhood special education major from Parkston, will present her Honors capstone defense “So Much More Than Just A Game: A Complete Summer Program Curriculum For School-Age Children Aligned to Education Standards.” Hohn will present during the final Geek Speak lecture of the fall semester, Thursday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. in room 110 of Jonas Hall on the BHSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Fourteen Black Hills State University students will showcase their artwork for the semester during the annual Wenona Cook Studio Tour.
Black Hills State University students and community are invited to the art students’ art show Wenona Cook Studio Tour in the Wenona Cook’s basement, Thursday, Dec. 3, 4-6 p.m. The event is open and free for students and community members.
The struggles of hunger and poverty are problems faced by people around the world each day. Two Black Hills State University professors will address the topics of hunger in the next Geek Speak.
Dr. Trenton Ellis, assistant professor of human services, and Dr. John Alsup, professor of math education, will present “Perspectives of Hunger” Thursday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. in room 110 of Jonas Hall on the BHSU campus. The presentation, the final Geek Speak this semester, is free and open to the public.
The 15th Annual Red Shirt Cultural Holiday Exchange at Black Hills State University is currently underway. Angel tree gifts are available on trees located in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union and the E.Y. Berry Library on the BHSU campus.
BHSU and Spearfish community members are encouraged to take an angel and place the unwrapped gift near the tree.
Black Hills State University alums and father, son, Donovin Sprague and Rylan Sprague recently published their book “Standing Rock: Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation.”
“Standing Rock: Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation” is a contemporary book that showcases the most recent history of the Standing Rock Reservation through photographs. The oldest photos in the book date from the 1930s.
Smooth jazz and century-old music are part of the upcoming Black Hills State University music concerts.
The BHSU jazz ensemble will perform Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and the Dakota Chamber Orchestra will perform on Sunday Nov. 15, 2:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the Clara & Josef Meier Hall on the BHSU campus and are free and open for the public.
Black Hills State University was named to Victory Media’s 2016 Military Friendly Schools, recently. This is the sixth consecutive year BHSU has made the list.
The Military Friendly Schools is awarded to the top 15 percent of higher educational institutions that do the most to embrace military students and to dedicate resources to ensure academic success.
The Black Hills State University Honors Program and Honors Club will host the second annual Furball to raise money for the West River Spay/Neuter Coalition.
The Furball is a masquerade and silent auction event. The Furball is Friday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Spearfish. There will be a cash bar, appetizers and music, along with a silent auction. Admission is $5 and organizers encourage the community to attend.
