Enrollment at Black Hills State University reached an all-time record high with 4,076 students enrolled for the fall 2009 semester. The enrollment increase breaks the previous record set nine years ago and solidly maintains BHSU’s status as the third largest university in South Dakota.

The South Dakota District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced today the Black Hills State University Foundation in Spearfish has been awarded a $750,000 grant to establish the South Dakota Women’s Business Center. The funding, which comes from the SBA, is provided to economic development organizations who directly assist entrepreneurs in South Dakota with special emphasis on women.

The Black Hills State University’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) recently recognized local volunteers for their over 52,000 hours of service. Last week, over 200 RSVP volunteer members and partnering agencies attended the event held at the Deadwood Gulch Convention Center, celebrating the service provided by BHSU RSVP volunteers during the past year.

The 44th annual Western Literature Association (WLA) Conference will be held in Spearfish Sept. 30-Oct. 3 with Black Hills State University as the host university. The conference is expected to draw more than 300 attendees from across the country.

Several Black Hills State University alumni were honored during an Alumni Awards Luncheon Sept. 18 at the Jacket Legacy Room at the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. The Excellence in Education Award was presented to Kathy Christensen; the Distinguished Alumnus Award presented to Dr. Michael (Mick) Dana; the Special Achievement Award was given to Carol Gee; and Howard Owens received the Special Service Award.
