For more than 20 years, Black Hills State University’s Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center has been a hub of community activity that brings in thousands of visitors. Next weekend the best Division II track and field competitors from South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico and Nebraska will converge at the Young Center for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Indoor Championship.

More than 40 former Black Hills State University track and field and cross country runners returned to campus recently to participate in the 21st annual Stadium Sports Grill BHSU Alumni Mile. The weekend-long event, held in conjunction with the Dave Little Invitational, included a Friday night social at the Stadium Sports Grill in downtown Spearfish, and an after-race luncheon in the BHSU Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame room.

Mike Bean has always been a fan of the University of Notre Dame athletics, especially football, so when the Black Hills State University alumnus got an internship in Notre Dame’s sports medicine department, he was fulfilling a dream.

Longtime Black Hills State University coach and athlete Dale Hardy, 88, died on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at the South Dakota Veteran’s Home in Hot Springs, leaving behind a successful career in athletics which spanned nearly six decades.

Black Hills State University will once again honor those individuals who have made significant contributions to the University’s rodeo program.

Nominations are currently being accepted for the BHSU Rodeo Hall of Fame. Those eligible include: stand-out athletes with emphasis on national performers, significant contributors to the BHSU rodeo program, and former BHSU rodeo coaches/advisors.

The name Cliff Papik has long been synonymous with athletics at Black Hills State University. The former BHSU coach and athletic director’s tenure spanned 30 years. This year he and his wife Jeanne will take on a new title – that of Swarm Day Parade Grand Marshals.

Black Hills State University is celebrating its recent move to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II with an All-Athletic Reunion Saturday, Sept. 22 in the gymnasium of the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center immediately following the Swarm Day football game versus Colorado Mesa University.

The Black Hills State University Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame will induct six individuals and two teams during the Swarm Days 2012 celebration. Individuals and teams to be recognized at the Hall of Fame Banquet Friday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room include: athletes Monica Dorn, Pat Guptill, and Steve Harshman; coach Eldon Marshall; and supporters Dana and LaDawn Dykhouse; the 1983 football team; and the 2000 men’s cross country team.

Black Hills State University is preparing for the annual homecoming celebration, which will take place Monday, Sept. 17 through Saturday, Sept. 22. This year’s homecoming theme is “Operation: Swarm Days” to show support for the deployed 842nd National Guard Unit.

The family and friends of Mark Larscheid donated an additional $4,100  to a scholarship through the Black Hills State University Yellow Jacket Foundation following a golf tournament this summer held in his memory. The fund total is now $37,000 making it the fourth largest athletic endowment at BHSU.  More than 100 golfers participated in the golf tournament this year followed by a successful silent auction.

The South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO) at Black Hills State University, in collaboration with Regional Health, will host a 5K/10K Run & Walk Saturday, June 16 in Spearfish. The run/walk will begin at 8 a.m. at the BHSU Lyle Hare Stadium, continue on the Spearfish Bike Path, and finish at the BHSU Lyle Hare Stadium. The 10K will start at the BHSU Lyle Hare Stadium, continue on the Spearfish bike path to Spearfish Canyon and also finish at the Lyle Hare Stadium. Event day registration will be from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.
