Secrets to happiness, funk music, and prison poetry are a few of the diverse topics slotted for this year’s Geek Speak lecture series held Thursdays at 4 p.m. in Jonas Hall on the Black Hills State University campus.  Tomorrow’s lecture, “Happy?  The Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment,” will be hosted by Jami Stone, associate professor of mathematics education.

As a child, Connie Hubbard, adjunct German and piano instructor at Black Hills State University, aspired to be a rock star or a famous actress.

Though she didn’t make it onto the big screen, Hubbard has made a name for herself in local theater, performing in, directing and accompanying numerous productions in Spearfish since her debut in “Oklahoma!” in 2002. She joins several other BHSU faculty, staff, students and alumni on the stage for this year’s Matthews Opera House Theater on the Run, Saturday, Sept. 6.

Black Hills State University and Sanford Underground Research Facility just received word that a $125,000 Innovation Grant from the South Dakota Board of Regents will fund infrastructure to advance the BHSU Underground Campus at Sanford Lab.

Black Hills State University music professor Dr. Symeon Waseen has spent much of his summer preparing for his fall performance of one of the 20th century’s premier piano masterpieces – including trips to the local hardware store.In the unique performance next month, Waseen will perform Sonatas and Interludes, with what is referred to as a “prepared piano piece” by the late composer John Cage.

Heidi Kegler checked one more thing off her bucket list. She rode a motorcycle.

Kegler was a passenger during the 2014 Jacket Ride Tuesday. The annual Jacket Ride takes motorcycle riders through the scenic Northern Black Hills during the famed Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Spearfish ranked number seven on the list, with Black Hills State University listed as a key component to the community’s high quality of life. Livability looks for small communities that inspire creativity and activity.
