Two longtime Black Hills State University professors, Jace DeCory, assistant professor of history and American Indian Studies, and Dr. Robert Schurrer, professor of exercise science, were recognized with the 2014 Distinguished Faculty Award, a prestigious honor which is bestowed upon them by their colleagues.

Tom Jackson Jr.Tom Jackson Jr., vice president for student affairs at the University of Louisville, will become the 10th president of Black Hills State University, the South Dakota Board of Regents announced Wednesday. Jackson succeeds President Kay Schallenkamp, who retires at the end of this academic year after eight years at the helm of the Spearfish-based campus. Jackson will begin his duties in South Dakota July 3.

Black Hills State University’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and become a “green” campus is being recognized nationally. The University’s dining services was recently notified that The Hive, the campus dining facility, and The Buzz Shack, a coffee and snack shop, have both been designated as 2 Star Certified Green Restaurants by the Green Restaurant Association (GRA.)

It was after reading the book “The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind” – a true story of a young African boy who built a windmill from junkyard scraps in order to help feed his village – that Greg Wilson knew he wanted to work in renewable energy. But it was through his courses as a graduate student in the Black Hills State University Master of Sustainability program that he was inspired to do much more.
