Black Hills State University alumni who were honored for their successes credited their experiences at BHSU as paving the way for their accomplishments. The five alumni were honored during the recent BHSU Swarm Week Alumni Awards luncheon, an annual event which recognizes the outstanding achievements of alumni.

For Black Hills State University photography student Rianna Hotz, her print “Domiciliary Stairwell” holds special meaning and now has received international recognition. Taken at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Hot Springs,it depicts a stairwell hidden away from the busyness of the medical center’s daily routine.

The name Cliff Papik has long been synonymous with athletics at Black Hills State University. The former BHSU coach and athletic director’s tenure spanned 30 years. This year he and his wife Jeanne will take on a new title – that of Swarm Day Parade Grand Marshals.

Black Hills State University will honor several outstanding alumni during the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon as a part of Swarm Days 2012. William "Bill" Weyer will be honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award; the Excellence in Education Award will be presented to Keith Stover; Jerome A. Greene will be recognized with the Special Achievement Award; and Johanna Meier and Guido Della Vecchia will be honored with the Special Service Award.

Black Hills State University is celebrating its recent move to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II with an All-Athletic Reunion Saturday, Sept. 22 in the gymnasium of the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center immediately following the Swarm Day football game versus Colorado Mesa University.

Greene, noted researcher and writer of American Indian, American West, and Western Military history, will give a presentation on Wounded Knee, 1890 Thursday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Jacket Legacy Room on the Black Hills State University campus.

Black Hills State University theatre students recently attended the Regional Kennedy Center-American College Theatre Festival in Ames, Iowa, where the BHSU production of “Almost, Maine” was awarded a certificate of merit to the entire cast for excellence in ensemble acting.

Dr. Symeon Waseen, assistant professor of music at Black Hills State University, has been chosen as the winner of the South Dakota Music Teacher’s Association (SDMTA) 2012 Composer Commissioning Project. His new composition will be premiered at the 2012 SDMTA annual conference which will be held in Spearfish.

James Stith student teachingBHSU has earned continuing accreditation for its teacher preparation program by meeting and exceeding the standards during an extensive review by NCATE. A reception celebrating this achievement will be held Wednesday, Dec. 7 from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.

Chris McCart, assistant professor and coordinator of the outdoor education program at Black Hills State University, was awarded the “Young Scholar” award by the Association for Moral Education. The scholarship assists in expenses to travel and present at the 2011 Association for Moral Education International Research Conference in Nanjing, China.
