Black Hills State University’s Swarm Days will kick off Monday, Sept. 14 and run through Saturday, Sept. 19. Community events including Homecoming week highlights include a Kiddie Carnival Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. on the campus green; Coronation and Homecoming Dance Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room; Alumni Awards Luncheon Friday, Sept. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room; and Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet Friday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room. BHSU is also hosting reunions for KBHU-FM and volleyball during this year’s Swarm Week.
Several Black Hills State University alumni will be honored during an Alumni Awards Luncheon Friday, Sept. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Jacket Legacy Room at the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. The Excellence in Education Award will be presented to Kathy Christensen; the Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to Dr. Michael (Mick) Dana; the Special Achievement Award will be given to Carol Gee; and Howard Owens will receive the Special Service Award.
Pre-Law Association will re-form this fall. In years past there has been a Pre-Law Association student organization on campus. This organization existed to serve the interests of BHSU undergraduate students who were considering attending law school and pursuing a career in law.
Scrub Camps are a one-day learning experience conducted at nine locations throughout the state. Campers will hear from healthcare professionals who will discuss what they do and how they got into their chosen career field. They will also be able to participate in exciting hands-on activities and receive personalized career guidance plans.
Black Hills State University will celebrate Constitution Day on Sept. 17 from 2-3 p.m. with an in-depth look at Abraham Lincoln and his work.
Black Hills State University will host a picnic for retired faculty and staff on Thursday, Sept. 10 at noon at the large shelter behind the band shell in the Spearfish City Park.
South Dakota high school students will have the rare opportunity to be involved in national physics research at the Sanford Lab thanks to an outreach program through Black Hills State University. This summer two high school physics teachers, one from Hill City and one from Aberdeen, participated in a national research and study program known as QuarkNet that is designed to get high school teachers, and ultimately high school students, involved in particle physics research.
Black Hills State University will host a local part time job fair Sept. 10 from 12-3:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Donald E. Young Center.
BHSU will host a job on campus job fair on Wednesday, Sept. 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the lobby of Meier Hall. (Please note the change of location.) Students looking for employment on campus are encouraged to attend.
Black Hills State University’s visual arts department along with the Spearfish Arts Center Gallery will host “The Deadwood Songbook” Concert Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Matthews Opera House. The concert will feature Hank Harris with Kenny Putnam and Ricky Jacobsen.
As students return to the Black Hills State University campus, they will be welcomed by a cadre of new faculty and staff as well as several major campus improvements.
Black Hills State University will begin the “First Fridays: Breakfast with the Arts” series Sept. 4 at 9:30 a.m., in Clare & Josef Meier Hall, Room 128 on the BHSU campus.
Black Hills State University will host the first rehearsal of the BHSU Community Choir Tuesday, Sept. 8.
The Dakota Chamber Orchestra will begin rehearsals for the 2009-2010 season Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. on the campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish. Rehearsals are held in the Meier Hall Band Room.
