This summer BHSU will offer American Red Cross youth swimming lessons at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. Half-hour lessons will be held Monday through Friday for two weeks. Four two-week sessions will be held throughout the summer: June 4-15, June 18-29, July 9-20, and July 23-Aug. 3.

Several Black Hills State University seniors will host their Senior Exit Show at the Matthews Opera House Friday, April 27 from 4-8 p.m., Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, April 29 from 1-4 p.m.

The Black Hills State University employee recognition reception will be held Wednesday, May 2 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in the Jacket Legacy Room of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. BHSU retirees and annual employee award winners will be honored at the reception.

BHSU will present a juried student award art show, “Happiness Camp,” in the Ruddell Art Gallery through May 13. A closing reception will be held May 3 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. BHSU art students entered a total of 80 pieces in the contest, from which 40 were chosen to be included in the show.

The 15th annual Island in the Plains: Black Hills Archaeological and Historical Symposium will be Saturday, May 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Spruce Room of the Spearfish Holiday Inn. Throughout the day regional anthropologists, archaeologists and historians will present papers about current research, findings, and trends as they relate to the Black Hills. The day will conclude with a banquet and a presentation by Dr. Larry Agendbroad entitled “Revisiting the Hudson-Meng Site, Northwest Nebraska: Bison Kill or Natural Death.”

Area schools are gearing up for CAR WARS, an electronics competition that is held annually in the Black Hills area, which requires the participants to first build a remote-controlled model car, and then race it. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, April 23 in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Rushmore Hall Room 104 in Rapid City.

BHSU will host the “Spring Final Fling” disc golf tournament Thursday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. for BHSU students and 5:30 p.m. for the community. Competitors are asked to meet at Hole One of the BHSU disc golf course 15 minutes prior to the start of their division’s tournament.

More than 50 school district representatives from 10 different states will be at the Black Hills Teacher Fair, April 20, 2007 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Donald E. Young Center gym on the Black Hills State University campus.

Conducting duties will be shared by Christopher Hahn, BHSU music instructor and director of the groups, and four students from the advanced conducting class.

The American Indian Health Research Program (AIHRP) at Black Hills State University will host an official naming ceremony Friday, April 20 at 2 p.m. at 1246 St. Joe Street in Spearfish. The AIHRP, which has been been informally known as the St. Joe House, will be officially named Wicozani Tipi, which means Health House in Lakota.

Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union on the BHSU campus, April 3 - April 22. The exhibition includes more than 50 photographs from former photography students representing more than two decades of innovative photography at BHSU.
