A QuickBooks training for beginners will be held at the Chamberlain Elementary School on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A QuickBooks training for advanced users will be held at the Chamberlain Elementary School on Friday, Nov. 16 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Both seminars will be held in the PAWS Classroom.

The garden located at the southwest corner of Black Hills State University’s Life Sciences Laboratory is different from others in the area.  BHSU professors Dr. Ben VanEe and Dr. Dan Asunskis hope that will change. The two science professors worked throughout the summer developing a native plant ethnobotanical garden on campus. Native plant landscaping, including Buffalo grass, is a part of the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) for the University’s new Life Sciences Laboratory which opened in February. The David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union is also a LEED certified building. Both buildings are part of BHSU’s commitment to sustainability.

The South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO) at Black Hills State University has partnered with the CPA firm Casey Peterson and Associates, Ltd., to bring a 10-week webinar series, “Quick Lessons on QuickBooks.” A one-hour webinar will be held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. MST/11 a.m. to noon CST. There are five remaining sessions.

Black Hills State University will be participating in “National Campus Sustainability Day” Wednesday, Oct. 24 to inform the community and BHSU students about what is being done on campus and in the Spearfish area to preserve and protect the environment.

Taylor Mali’s mastery with words inspired many to go into the teaching profession. Now, for the first time in the state the former teacher and well-known poet will bring his message to Black Hills State University. Mali will speak Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Meier Recital Hall as part of the Madeline A. Young Distinguished Speaker Series.

Black Hills State University will host a lecture on hydrogen solar cells by Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer John A. Turner. The talk, “Frontiers, Opportunities and Challenges for a Hydrogen Economy” will be held Friday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. in Jonas Hall room 305.

The registration deadline for the DDN Class Start Right: Build Your Own Business has been extended to Oct. 11. The class, sponsored by the South Dakota Center for Enterprise Opportunity (SD CEO) at Black Hills State University, has partnered with Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the Black Hills (CCCS/BH) to offer the class via DDN at the following locations: Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Northern State University, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, and the University Center-Sioux Falls.

Dr. Symeon Waseen, Black Hills State University music professor, will perform one of his personal compositions with American pianist Stephen Swedish during a recital Saturday in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall. The program, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will include Schubert’s “Trout Quintet” with string players from the Black Hills region, along with selections including Debussy’s L’isle joyeuse and Dialogues written by Waseen.

BHSU alum Jerome Greene presents to an audience of more than 50More than 50 people attended a presentation on the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre by Jerome Greene, a 1968 BHSU graduate. Greene read excerpts from his manuscript including first-hand survivor accounts obtained from his research. The presentation, part of the Swarm Week festivities, was sponsored by the BHSU Alumni Office and the Case Library for Western Historical Studies. Greene is one of several alumni honored this homecoming.

BHSU student photographer in the Black HillsPhotographers from all over the country will soon converge on the Black Hills State University campus to hone their skills and showcase the beauty of the Black Hills as their subject. The third annual Black Hills Photo Shootout will be held from Sept. 28-30 at BHSU and throughout the region. The event showcases the natural beauty of South Dakota along with the photography expertise of highly respected professional photographers.
