Several Black Hills State University alumni were honored during an Alumni Awards Luncheon Sept. 18 at the Jacket Legacy Room at the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union. The Excellence in Education Award was presented to Kathy Christensen; the Distinguished Alumnus Award presented to Dr. Michael (Mick) Dana; the Special Achievement Award was given to Carol Gee; and Howard Owens received the Special Service Award.

Black Hills State University and the Yellow Jacket Foundation hosted the Second Annual Yellow Jacket 5K/10K Run Sept. 20 to conclude the Swarm Week festivities. The event raised nearly $1,000 for scholarships to Black Hills State student-athletes.

Black Hills State University art graduate Dustin Price will have his artwork, A Discourse in Stillness: The Language of Silence on exhibit at the Apex Gallery on the campus of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Sept. 28 through Nov. 6. Black Hills State University’s Swarm Days will kick off Monday, Sept. 14 and run through Saturday, Sept. 19. Community events including Homecoming week highlights include a Kiddie Carnival Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. on the campus green; Coronation and Homecoming Dance Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room; Alumni Awards Luncheon Friday, Sept. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room; and Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet Friday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room. BHSU is also hosting reunions for KBHU-FM and volleyball during this year’s Swarm Week.

South Dakota high school students will have the rare opportunity to be involved in national physics research at the Sanford Lab thanks to an outreach program through Black Hills State University. This summer two high school physics teachers, one from Hill City and one from Aberdeen, participated in a national research and study program known as QuarkNet that is designed to get high school teachers, and ultimately high school students, involved in particle physics research.
