Warren J. Wilson, director of the South Dakota Board of Regents’ Information Systems, has been named to a joint appointment as chief information technology officer for Black Hills State University and executive director of the South Dakota Library Network (SDLN). Wilson will replace Arnie Hemmingson, chief information officer, who is retiring this spring. Hemmingson has led the computer and information technology department at BHSU since 1985.

The opportunity of a lifetime is only weeks away for 20 Black Hills State University students and leaders who will assist with hurricane relief efforts in New Orleans, gutting houses, removing mold, and rebuilding. Preparation for members of the Alternative Spring Break team is neither easy nor inexpensive; however, recent action by a community business leader once again exemplifies the great generosity of the Black Hills community.

fuqua_amy.jpg Dr. Amy Fuqua, associate professor in humanities, has been named interim director of the Honors Program at Black Hills State University. Fuqua has served on the Honors Advisory Council since 2005 and has taught Honors courses in composition and literature. She replaces Dr. Roger Ochse, who retired last semester.

vita_thumb.jpg Black Hills State University students who are members of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will be preparing tax returns at BHSU in Clare and Josef Meier Hall room 207 Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. starting Jan. 31 through March 31. Volunteers will also be preparing returns every Saturday at the Spearfish Public Library from 10  a.m. to 3 p.m.

thumb_recital_9949.jpg The music of Cole Porter will be featured in a special one-hour program by Black Hills State University music faculty and friends Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the recital hall in Clare and Josef Meier Hall. The concert is open to the public at no charge, but donations for BHSU music scholarships will be accepted at the door.

Black Hills State University admissions representative Erin Richards will visit 14 area high schools next week to discuss college plans with students. High school students needing information about college costs, financial aid, housing, and academic information should plan to visit with Richards.

haislett_judith.jpg Dr. Judith Haislett, vice president for student life at Black Hills State University, is taking on a new position as assistant to the president and director of special projects as of July 1, 2007. In her new position, Haislett will oversee several special projects including serving as chairperson for the 125th Anniversary Celebration for BHSU, coordinating emergency planning procedures, and managing the review and development of the university policy manual.  She will also coordinate training and professional development for the campus by assisting with staff orientation and creating on-going faculty and staff professional development events.

Young Sports and Fitness Center giving students the opportunity to gain essential experience as a part of several changes at the Young Center. The students will become much more involved in fitness training as well as becoming involved in management and operational roles.
